About Us
By combining freshness and creativity, the Bistro Hortus offers you a menu rich in local and organic products. For your greatest pleasure, chef Stéphane Roth presents a menu of the “Ferme à la Table” trend. With his unique cooking style, he puts the spotlight as much on meat and fish as on vegetables, always with a view to eco-responsible cuisine. An experience combining good food, good atmosphere and good prices awaits you!
Hortus is the proud owner of two green rooftop gardens located in the heart of Vieux-Québec, right above you! Our crops are quintessential part of your meal.
Our chef Stéphane Roth harvesting fresh vegetables from our roof.
Our gardens will provide some of the fruits and vegetables used in our recipes. Production being limited due to space constraint, we work closely with Quebec farmers who grow organic produce.
OUR BEES
We also own multiple beehives placed onto large strawberry fields at l’ole-d’orleans, home of our Oh Bio partner. Tree beehives are located on the rooftop of Hotel du Vieux Quebec and greatly improve the pollination of our gardens.
The importance of bees to biodiversity
Besides providing their beloved honey, bees are a fondamental part of every aspect linked to the ecosystem. Bees are the most important pollinators, close to 80%, therefore essential to flowering plants reproduction. They are also vital through food chain, considering that 35% of fruits and vegetables depend on pollination by insects

À essayer !View more

The bistro was stylish & the food was delicious. I love how the restaurant pairs with & supports the local community, has their own rooftop garden, & collect their own honey.View more
This was the best gluten free brunch I have had in the seven years I have been celiac. Amazing service & large portion sizes. Service was incredible.View more

In my opinion, this restaurant is the best one in Old Quebec city. Price was reasonable for the quality of food they provided. Highly recommendedView more

My family & I came here for brunch while on vacation. This was our favorite meal of the trip. To start, we were warmly welcomed. The decor was modern, cozy & clean, & featured photos from Hortus' rooftop aviary & gardens. There were frames of honeycomb on display, including a honeycomb to sample. I had the brunch poutine, which was fabulous & very filling. My family members had the burger, the veggie burger, & pot au fou. Everyone was happy with their dishes. The home made condiments came in cute little glass jars. The wine selection was good, & I enjoyed my "Bloody Hortus" cocktail. We'll be coming here again next time we're in Quebec.View more
Everything was delicious & fresh tasting. I was shocked at the size of the vegetable lasagna. It could feed two people.View more
Wow! View more

The food didn't taste as good as I thought. Tasted like something you cook home. Although the wine was very good. The staff was very pushy when it comes to ordering food & didn't let me enjoy my wine firstView more
Definitely a 4.8 out of 5 experience for this celiac gal. Menus in both French & English which is nice since my son isn't fluent yet. Kudos to the chef, food was divine & on point. Presentation was lovely for the type of establishment. Taste was good, but slightly too fatty for my liking. Just preference, nothing bad. I would have preferred if the music was slightly lower. It was difficult for us to hear one another with all the patrons inside. My farm to table dish was incredibly delicious. It came to $60 (market price) My son had the poutine & ate it all. Both were completely gluten free meals. I had a delicious herbal mint tea to finish the meal, & my son enjoyed a gluten free, chocolate cake. He really enjoyed it! View more
We had the pot au feu which was very good, the vegetable sauté which was good but a bit oily (see additional photo), the Quebecois Brunch which was good but had a hair in the egg & the Hortus burger which was very bland. Service was good. Coffee was not good. Atmosphere was ok but a bit calm even though we went during the Carnival of Quebec. No parking & a bit pricey but it's to be expected since it's located in the vieux Québec.View more
