About

Général Tao provides a contemporary take on classic Chinese cuisine by focusing on bold flavor profiles and high-quality ingredients. The menu highlights signature preparations like the iconic General Tao chicken which balances crispy textures with a tangy, sweet, and mildly spicy glaze. Patrons encounter a wide array of wok-tossed dishes featuring fresh vegetables, tender proteins, and fragrant steamed rice options that define the core Asian culinary experience. Every plate emphasizes consistency through traditional cooking techniques and authentic seasoning blends sourced directly from established recipes. The establishment utilizes a streamlined service model designed to deliver hot, flavorful meals efficiently. This approach ensures that standard staples such as savory stir-fries and aromatic noodle bowls maintain their distinct characteristics during every preparation cycle for a focused and reliable dining experience.

Review Summary

Général Tao offers a polarizing experience where many guests praise the authentic flavors, generous portions, and high quality of dishes like the duck and classic signature chicken, while others express significant frustration regarding service standards and pricing transparency. Although the atmosphere is described as a charmingly rustic and quiet setting, frequent concerns have been raised about unwelcoming staff, potential irregularities with payment systems and gratuity expectations, and inconsistent portion sizes for takeout orders. While some diners consider it the best Szechuan cuisine in the city, potential visitors should be mindful of the billing process and the aging decor, as the overall reputation remains a mix of culinary delight and service-related disappointment.

VERY DISAPPOINTED!

Not only the food was not up to the standards, the venue looks old & not well maintained. The service could be improved by being slightly more friendly, but there were some efforts.

First main issue is with the food: the portion was small & expensive & didn't taste like an authentic Cantonese Chow Mein. No BBQ pork, only a choice of chicken OR shrimp, the noodles weren't crispy enough before the sauce was poured, & the sauce tasted bland.

Second main issue: the options for pre-selecting the tip percentage (%). Enter your desired tip amount manually to avoid being overcharged.

I clearly selected the 15% one because this is the minimum I give, even when I'm not satisfied.

In this case my total for this one plate & a coke was, taxes included, $36.22.

Somehow my credit card was charged for $47.07, which would include a 30% tip of $10.87 on the total after taxes.

As most items on the menu are overpriced, & given my negative experience with the payment, I would not recommend this restaurant.

47$ for a bowl of noodles of this quality is absurd.

How could they call that Chinese food? It is the worst chinese food I have ever tasted. & their portion is ridiculous. They should be ashamed .....Even in small villages in China, I had better food.

People visiting Quebec keep a lookout for SERVICE FEES. They legally cannot ask you to pay for a'service fee' & they usually target foreigners/visitors. I called it out & they immediately got disappointed & even had the audacity to call us *rude*. Talk to a manager & get it waived. (P.s. u don't *have* to tip 15% either, they expected that too & when we disagreed he went on to say that we should do take-out next time & not dine-in) idk what is wrong with people these days. Such a disrespectful & disappointing experience.
