Le Café du Monde has an excellent reputation for several reasons! Our early supper at the Café was to celebrate an anniversary. The staff were courteous & friendly, as well as very knowledgeable. We started with gin tastings - 3 Québec gins, which were incredibly refreshing. Our entrées, pieuvre & tapenade aux olives & saumon tartare were exceptional!! So succulent & delicious. The mains were very good, but the appetizers were the star of the show! The rosé suggested with the main course was on point. Marie L. our server was professional & swift. Our water was refilled without even our noticing (it was a very hot day). The view of the fleuve was beautiful. Would highly recommend this as a stop while meandering the Old Port in Québec!
Based on most of the previous reviews, we had high hopes but left a bit disappointed. This is not to discourage anyone from going to Cafe du Monte, but just to moderate the expectations you might have. First, it is a very large venue & it feels like the basic philosophy is to move the tables as quickly as possible. To that end, the menu is quite limited so that the kitchen has only a few dishes to prepare. Other than the soup du jour, there were not specials offered. Our waitress pushed us to order quickly & when we did, our appetizers appeared about a minute later. While we hate waiting long periods for our food, the speed of the service was truly off-putting. Indeed, because of the limited selections, we decided just to have appetizers & go somewhere else for entrees. That said, our appetizers were quite good — tuna tartare & seafood chowder. In short, as terrific as the setting is, this is not the place for a quiet well-paced dining experience. Even the view was a bit disappointing because there are plants that they have let grow up above the railing which requires one to stand up to see the river clearly. This is a good restaurant if you don't mind limited choices, sitting very close to other tables, & a fast meal.
