L'entrecôte Saint-Jean offers a classic French bistro experience in the heart of Old Quebec, well known for its signature steak frites served with a flavorful, secret sauce. Many diners appreciate the generous table d'hôte options, which typically include soup, salad, a perfectly cooked steak, and popular desserts like profiteroles at a reasonable price point. While the atmosphere is often described as warm, cozy, and reminiscent of Paris, the service is generally highlighted as efficient and friendly, though some guests have noted occasional inconsistencies in seating or menu preferences. Overall, it remains a popular destination for those seeking a reliable and traditional meal in a beautiful setting.
We were pretty disappointed in this experience. This restaurant is half fancy half fast food vibe. Meaning the decor is fancy but they give paper menus as a table cover & napkins instead of a serviette. Our steaks plainly weren't good, they had no flavour whatsoever, definitely missing some spices. The salad was inedible. dessert was Ok again nothing had much flavour. The soup of the day was the tastiest thing on the menu ! Service was good.

We had a delicious meal here recommended by our tour guide earlier in the day. The steak was flavorful & tender, & the fries crisp. Our waitress was attentive. We recommend getting reservations here early in the day. We waited until the afternoon & the first available was 8:15pm. This is late for us. However, when we showed up earlier, the maitre'd found us seats earlier, which we appreciated very much!
Vegetable soup was smooth with a good scent of carrot. However, the salad was very mushy & too nutty from the walnuts. Steak was too tough & cooked too much for a medium rare, but the sauce was great. The dessert was okay. You get what you pay for it here.
I recently dined at L' Entrecote Saint-Jean &, unfortunately, had a very disappointing experience. I ordered a medium-well steak, but it arrived almost raw. I had to send it back, which meant waiting while my husband ate his meal. When I finally received my steak, it still wasn't cooked properly, especially given the high price. To make matters worse, when we left a 5% tip based on the poor experience, the waiter confronted us, asking why we tipped so little & mentioning that he needed to share tips with others. He was quite rude, & it made an already unpleasant evening even worse. While I understand the importance of tipping, being pressured like that is unacceptable. I personally won't be returning to this restaurant, & I hope they can improve their service & food quality for future customers.
The salad that was supposed to be "Boston" was a substitute. The fries were not crispy, & the steak was a little tough with very little gravy provided. The bread was not fresh. I was an avid customer at the Entrecote St-Jean in Montreal, & this is no match. Unfortunately, the Montreal restaurant is closed!
My wife had the duck confit which was very delicious. The side salad served with it was tasteless & dry. It needed more dressing for sure. I had the steak frites The steak was cooked perfectly but I thought it was a little bland, needed more seasoning Also the famous mustard sauce was not that flavorful. The matchstick fries are quite tasty although you have to ask for ketchup as it's not typically something served at a French restaurant. A table along the sidewalk was very nice.
I had tried making a reservation through the google maps & nothing was available until later. We went ahead & walked there from our hotel & were seated immediately outside. We both ordered the house special. If you are American like us, you won't see the word steak but it is essentially steak & fries. We ordered the smaller size as it comes with soup of the day, salad, bread, steak cooked to order with an amazing sauce & matchstick fries. There is also coffee & dessert(cream puff shell filled with vanilla ice cream & covered in chocolate sauce & almond slivers). All was delicious. I had 2white sangrias & my partner had a beer. Total before tip was $130 which is reasonable for the area & everything that you get.
