About

THE TRADITION OF TASTE

Inspired by the roots of Italian cuisine, we have thought of everything to make your meal as delicious as it could possibly be. We serve fresh hand-made pasta, high-quality locally-sourced meat and first-class risotto that is quite simply divine. Allow us to tempt you with our sublime tartars and our oven-baked pizzas made with first-class Italian products.

TERRAZZA…WOW !

With its view of the sky over Old Quebec City, Bello’s terrace, once finished, will offer a totally unique configuration. With the same number of seats as the restaurant’s interior, the ground floor with its glass covering will now be capped with a second-floor patio open to the fresh air. There you can enjoy the warmth of the sun’s rays and beautiful summer evenings accompanied by a delicious meal.

THE PRIVATE DINING ROOM

The best-kept secret at Bello is undoubtedly our beautiful private dining room. It offers all the intimacy and comfort you need to take the time to examine our wine cellar through its glass front. This room, which can accommodate up to 16 persons, also offers cutting-edge technology with Wi-Fi, Internet access and a top-quality audio system. Our private dining room will definitely become the location of choice for your business meetings.

Great Pasta, great cheese, great service, great beer.

The pizza sauce on the other hand tastes like canned tomatoes sauce - I do not recommend having pizza here.

Three stars - only because I want this review public. Anything below three stars will only be privately shared with the owner, & I'd rather this review is seen by other potential patrons.

Location is pretty central in Old Quebec. That's about the only good thing.

Food menu has lots of options. Quality of food is average at best. Polpette (meatballs) were so average it tasted like what I can make at home. This is disappointing for a dish that costs $20+, even in CAD. Carbonara was ok - a little too watery though, for someone who has had good Carbonara at a legit Italian place. Tasted like it was made with some liquified sauce, rather than actual freshly cracked egg yolks. The only thing that tasted good? Bread (which is $1) & salad. Pretty sad for an Italian place.

Service was the worst. Entered the restaurant, no greetings, no acknowledgement from any server even though our eyes met several times with one who was working the tables closest to the entrance . We waited for an awkward three minutes or so until a server in the inner area beckoned us with his hands to come his way. Again, no greeting or acknowledgement or apology for any wait. Sat us down at what felt like a temporary table, didn't have the standard white paper placed on top of every other table's black tablecloth. Got my order wrong (I ordered two items - half Carbonara & half Vongole) but they only brought out a half serving of Carbonara. When I tried the Carbonara I didn't bother asking for my Vongole. I made sure to read the check so they don't charge me for an order they missed.

Overall, highly overrated restaurant with bad service. Felt like they were missing a head server, or had a very bad one who doesn't know or care about good service. Should've known when I saw the huge Tripadvisor flag outside this place.

My husband & I had 3 dinners at il Bello 21-23 September. All evenings were wonderful. Negronis delicious; wine recommendations spot on for each meal. We had beef tartare, veal with lemon sauce, Caesar salad, linguine Nero, risotto with scallops, linguine carbonara, foie gras, pana cotta, il Bello cake. Everything was perfect. Wait staff were professional & friendly, & moved fluidly between English & French. The staff were upbeat & worked smoothly together which says a lot about the overall management of the restaurant. We had reservations the first 2 nights & just walked in, early (5:30), the last night. The manager, Pierre-Olivier, recognized us & was very welcoming. The ambience is cozy with the right amount of background music to lend atmosphere but not so loud as to discourage conversation. The clientele was a mix of couples, families, groups of friends, a birthday party & one night a large business group. With a large number of restaurants to choose from in Quebec City, il Bello stands out on value, cuisine & ambience. Be sure to have a walk by the City Hall fountains to complete the evening.

Our second visit was somewhat disappointing. Being of Italian descent, the pasta Bolognese is a complete MIS-NOMER ... it was NOT a Bolognese sauce at all [a Bolognese sauce is comprised of chopped meat (a combination of beef, veal, pork) with a small amount of finely chopped carrot & other seasonings in a tomato base] ... what was served was spaghetti & very hard meat balls in a not-so-good tomato sauce! The quality of the beef carpaccio was excellent (as it was the 1st time) BUT too much stuff (including vinegar doused chopped mushrooms) is served over it ... it should be a much more delicate dish [beef carpaccio on the plate (no greens under it) decorated with a small amount of finely shaved (not grated) parmesan or Romano cheese; some watercress (undressed) in center; extra-virgin olive oil or truffle oil over top ... & THAT'S IT!] With two tables (later 3) dining at an off-hour in the afternoon service should have been attentive to a fault ... but it was more like we were intruding. Sorry to say that Bello will not be on my list of restaurants to visit when next I travel to Quebec City. I don't like writing reviews like this but I'm hoping the chef & the management will read it.

We visited Tuesday the 18th of September & Sunday the 23rd. Bello provides a great experience along with great food. The servers work very well together without being overbearing.

Some of the Tuesday highlights: Arancini appetizer excellent, smoked salmon excellent (unless you're one who prefers a more "cooked" fish). Veal Scallopini with mushrooms was the best scallopini I've ever had & their risotto with shrimp was excellent. Tiramisu dessert was presented imaginatively in a small canning jar & just like the entrees was excellent.

Sunday's meal was every bit as good. Fried calamari appetizer was a very generous portion presented with a nice remoulade sauce. Ceasar salad for two was very nicely presented. We each did 1/2 orders of pasta (so glad they have the 1/2 option). The lobster ravioli was incredible & the seafood linguini was great.

Service was perfectly paced, that very fine balance between "no rushing" & no waiting for what comes next. If your server becomes involved with a larger table there's another who will stop by to keep everything on track.

It's hard to say if we were more impressed by the food or by the teamwork & professionalism.

Bello is on St Louis, a few blocks away from the crowded St Jean street. It's well worth making a reservation & doing the uphill walk from St Jean street.

Only one small quibble: be aware that many restaurants suggest a tip on the subtotal before taxes, Bello's suggested amounts are based on the total with taxes. Easy enough for a decision if you look at the amounts.
