About

IN PHOTOS (pdf)

By combining freshness and creativity, the Bistro Hortus offers you a menu rich in local and organic products. For your greatest pleasure, chef Stéphane Roth presents a menu of the “Ferme à la Table” trend. With his unique cooking style, he puts the spotlight as much on meat and fish as on vegetables, always with a view to eco-responsible cuisine. An experience combining good food, good atmosphere and good prices awaits you!

Hortus is the proud owner of two green rooftop gardens located in the heart of Vieux-Québec, right above you! Our crops are quintessential part of your meal.

Our chef Stéphane Roth harvesting fresh vegetables from our roof.

Our gardens will provide some of the fruits and vegetables used in our recipes. Production being limited due to space constraint, we work closely with Quebec farmers who grow organic produce.

OUR BEES

We also own multiple beehives placed onto large strawberry fields at l’ole-d’orleans, home of our Oh Bio partner. Tree beehives are located on the rooftop of Hotel du Vieux Quebec and greatly improve the pollination of our gardens.

The importance of bees to biodiversity

Besides providing their beloved honey, bees are a fondamental part of every aspect linked to the ecosystem. Bees are the most important pollinators, close to 80%, therefore essential to flowering plants reproduction. They are also vital through food chain, considering that 35% of fruits and vegetables depend on pollination by insects

Review Summary

Bistro Hortus is widely recognized as a premier destination in Old Quebec, celebrated for its high-quality, farm-to-table cuisine and inclusive, entirely gluten-free menu. Guests frequently praise the fresh, locally sourced ingredients and creative dishes, with specific highlights including the pouding chomeur, goat cheese appetizers, and various duck preparations. While the atmosphere is consistently described as cozy, charming, and welcoming, with a beautiful terrace, the service is a standout feature for many, often characterized as attentive, professional, and exceptionally friendly. Although experiences regarding noise levels and certain menu experimentalism can vary, the restaurant remains a highly recommended spot for those with dietary restrictions and anyone seeking a flavorful, authentic dining experience in the heart of the city.

we ate at hortus on our first night in the city because we were staying at the hotel & we were pleasantly surprised for a hotel restaurant experience. the food & drinks were thoughtful but uncomplicated & the service was friendly. we chose patio seating & it was noisy & chaotic, but that's a function of the location, not the restaurant. if you like a bustle, do sit outside.

Au début j'ai pensé que c'était fade leurs cuisine à cause de menu sans gluten mais finalement c'est devenu ma routine de manger chez eux avec ma famille & mes amis chaque semaine 🍴 Délicieux & je me sens comme chez moi maintenant

Stay away if you enjoy great food. Minus mediocre at best. Ordered the $11 bread basket & received the four thinnest slices measuring 1/8th of an inch & 4 crispy thin wafers measuring 1/16th of an inch. Big plates with super tiny portions. The food is not the $300 Canadian dollars we spent on what I describe as'painted food'. Walked out hungry & walked over for a pizza pie in order to satisfy my hunger pangs. What a dissapointment after having read the nice reviews that were posted by other diners. Seriously, you are so much better off reading the numerous menus posted on other nearby restaurants serving real food.

Amazing! The food is delicious, celiac or not! I ate here twice with my non-gluten free friend & both times were incredible. Per the non gf friend's words'I cannot tell this is gluten free' while we were eating the grilled cheese. Cannot reccomend enough.

Delicious, very nice patio & interior & great service. Everything we ordered exceeded expectations & tasted amazing. Gluten free restaurant. If gluten is not a concern for you, I'd encourage you to eat here anyway - you would never know the difference & the food is amazing.

Looking for a great vegan friendly restaurant in Quebec City - Found! Really good burger, chicken & lasagna entrees. Highly recommended.

However, we booked online & had to wait til 8:45pm for our res… so I asked if they could pull us up, & boom, they found us a spot almost an hour in advance! So - if you need flexibility, just ask.

Excellente adresse! La bouffe est délicieuse, le service est rapide pis le personnel est vraiment accueillant. Les prix sont plus que raisonnables pour ce qu'on reçoit. Un beau rapport qualité-prix - on va repasser c'est sûr.
