About

IN PHOTOS (pdf)

By combining freshness and creativity, the Bistro Hortus offers you a menu rich in local and organic products. For your greatest pleasure, chef Stéphane Roth presents a menu of the “Ferme à la Table” trend. With his unique cooking style, he puts the spotlight as much on meat and fish as on vegetables, always with a view to eco-responsible cuisine. An experience combining good food, good atmosphere and good prices awaits you!

Hortus is the proud owner of two green rooftop gardens located in the heart of Vieux-Québec, right above you! Our crops are quintessential part of your meal.

Our chef Stéphane Roth harvesting fresh vegetables from our roof.

Our gardens will provide some of the fruits and vegetables used in our recipes. Production being limited due to space constraint, we work closely with Quebec farmers who grow organic produce.

OUR BEES

We also own multiple beehives placed onto large strawberry fields at l’ole-d’orleans, home of our Oh Bio partner. Tree beehives are located on the rooftop of Hotel du Vieux Quebec and greatly improve the pollination of our gardens.

The importance of bees to biodiversity

Besides providing their beloved honey, bees are a fondamental part of every aspect linked to the ecosystem. Bees are the most important pollinators, close to 80%, therefore essential to flowering plants reproduction. They are also vital through food chain, considering that 35% of fruits and vegetables depend on pollination by insects

Review Summary

Bistro Hortus is widely recognized as a premier destination in Old Quebec, celebrated for its high-quality, farm-to-table cuisine and inclusive, entirely gluten-free menu. Guests frequently praise the fresh, locally sourced ingredients and creative dishes, with specific highlights including the pouding chomeur, goat cheese appetizers, and various duck preparations. While the atmosphere is consistently described as cozy, charming, and welcoming, with a beautiful terrace, the service is a standout feature for many, often characterized as attentive, professional, and exceptionally friendly. Although experiences regarding noise levels and certain menu experimentalism can vary, the restaurant remains a highly recommended spot for those with dietary restrictions and anyone seeking a flavorful, authentic dining experience in the heart of the city.

We had two great gluten-free experiences here. Once for dinner & then for lunch the next day. We had heard good things about this restaurant & that it was also dog friendly so we headed here for dinner when we arrived in Quebec. We had seats on the patio quickly with our puppy & Jour had our drinks quickly. I had a delicious gluten-free beer & my girlfriend had the french martini. We had the burger & an order of their poutine. They were amazing & we felt safe from gluten issues. The next day were had lunch. We had the verdurette, baked brie, & the grilled cheese with beef on top. Oh, & 4 Sangria to hydrate. Highly recommend!

We loved Hortus. My wife & I are both gluten free & were excited to find this restaurant. We were able to sit outside as I made reservations online before travelling. We both had French Onion Soup & it was amazing. My wife had poutine & loved it, & I had wild boar rilletes (on the appetizer) menu & it was delicious. We would go back again.

Good atmosphere. Yummy food.
The cheeses were very good.
Poutine was good.
Dessert was a highlight of the night! Very similar to sticky toffee pudding. But i was called pouding something.

This was a mediocre meal for us. We ordered carpaccio, duck poutine, & lamb shank. The carpaccio & poutine had an odd combination of flavours. Too much going on. The duck poutine had an orange sauce that in my opinion undermined the whole dish. Probably my fault for ordering it.

The lamb shank was nice & tender, but the dish was plain & lacking flavour. It just felt like all three of our meals were disappointing & too experimental.

The service was fine, but I don't recall anyone checking in after we ordered. We got a refill of water just before we were ready to leave.

I wouldn't come back here.

A Tale of Two Dinners
We had dinner here twice. The person greeting you at the door is consistently warm & engaging but that was where the similarities ended.
The first night we were delighted to discover that most everything on the menu is gluten free & celiac safe. It's always a relief to find a dedicated gluten free restaurant. Our server was attentive & helpful navigating the menu. Cocktails were interesting & the appetizers were wonderful. The onion soup in particular was rich & delicious. The burger was fantastic & the gluten free bun had a fantastic brioche like texture. The vegetable soup was innovative & delighted a 10 year old. The meal was memorable enough that we decided to return.
Unfortunately our follow up dinner was a mirror image of the first. Our server was inattentive & largely absent. When she brought us a ketchup that had been mostly used by someone else there was no apology, she just shrugged it off. The same onion soup was incredibly salty & barely warm enough to soften the cheese. Never having had poutine I decided to try their spin on the dish with duck a l'orange poutine. It was far too sweet to enjoy & again not warm enough for the cheese to melt. The care & attention paid to our previous meal was out the window & we left feeling that we had paid a lot for second rate food & sub-par service.

Lovely restaurant with many unique dishes reflecting the local region. All the servings were huge; we did not finish our main courses. The charcuterie appetiser of local meats & cheeses was outstanding (although it should come with fresh French bread instead of tasteless, hard toast/cracker things), as was the poutine with duck breast. Local, innovative & delicious. The tables are a bit too close to each other if you get a loud party near you; we had two. People really need to more self aware of their volume.
