About

IN PHOTOS (pdf)

By combining freshness and creativity, the Bistro Hortus offers you a menu rich in local and organic products. For your greatest pleasure, chef Stéphane Roth presents a menu of the “Ferme à la Table” trend. With his unique cooking style, he puts the spotlight as much on meat and fish as on vegetables, always with a view to eco-responsible cuisine. An experience combining good food, good atmosphere and good prices awaits you!

Hortus is the proud owner of two green rooftop gardens located in the heart of Vieux-Québec, right above you! Our crops are quintessential part of your meal.

Our chef Stéphane Roth harvesting fresh vegetables from our roof.

Our gardens will provide some of the fruits and vegetables used in our recipes. Production being limited due to space constraint, we work closely with Quebec farmers who grow organic produce.

OUR BEES

We also own multiple beehives placed onto large strawberry fields at l’ole-d’orleans, home of our Oh Bio partner. Tree beehives are located on the rooftop of Hotel du Vieux Quebec and greatly improve the pollination of our gardens.

The importance of bees to biodiversity

Besides providing their beloved honey, bees are a fondamental part of every aspect linked to the ecosystem. Bees are the most important pollinators, close to 80%, therefore essential to flowering plants reproduction. They are also vital through food chain, considering that 35% of fruits and vegetables depend on pollination by insects

Review Summary

Bistro Hortus is widely recognized as a premier destination in Old Quebec, celebrated for its high-quality, farm-to-table cuisine and inclusive, entirely gluten-free menu. Guests frequently praise the fresh, locally sourced ingredients and creative dishes, with specific highlights including the pouding chomeur, goat cheese appetizers, and various duck preparations. While the atmosphere is consistently described as cozy, charming, and welcoming, with a beautiful terrace, the service is a standout feature for many, often characterized as attentive, professional, and exceptionally friendly. Although experiences regarding noise levels and certain menu experimentalism can vary, the restaurant remains a highly recommended spot for those with dietary restrictions and anyone seeking a flavorful, authentic dining experience in the heart of the city.

Like most bistros the things to order are not many. But what Bistro Hortus offers does delight. Took a chance on Boxing Day & we were handsomely rewarded. My two teens had the breakfast poutine with duck eggs. Tasted more like an elegant stew. My wife got the salmon with lobster bisque. "Mmmmm's" were heard throughout. I had the duck egg omelet with Quebec mushrooms & a refreshing salad. Hit the spot. My oldest treated themselves to a hot chocolate that featured ganache, maple foam, & homemade marshmallows. If in Old Quebec, definitely worth your time.

Friendly, upscale Bistro next to our favorite boutique hotel in Quebec! The Filet Mignon & BBQ chicken were delicious with unique sauces. My husband even ate the roasted veggies, which was shocking!

I wish we had time to dine at Bistro Hortus a second & third time. Delicious food...soups are wonderful! Not having to worry if the menu is gluten free is fantastic. Easy going vibe & the service was prompt & friendly. Great location too.

Wow! J'ai adoré ma soirée au bistro Hortus. Le service de notre serveuse était excellent. Les allergenes sont bien identifiés sur le menu, & presque tout est sans gluten! Je recommande cet endroit à 100%.

The bistro was stylish & the food was delicious. I love how the restaurant pairs with & supports the local community, has their own rooftop garden, & collect their own honey.

We spent 9 days in Quebéc. We ate at Bistro Hortus 4 of those days because it was so good. They have the best hot chocolate in the city, their brunches are incredible, & they allowed us to do takeout on our busy first night there when other restaurants told us no. The service was always attentive, but the food was the star of the show. We already can't wait to visit again!
