About

IN PHOTOS (pdf)

By combining freshness and creativity, the Bistro Hortus offers you a menu rich in local and organic products. For your greatest pleasure, chef Stéphane Roth presents a menu of the “Ferme à la Table” trend. With his unique cooking style, he puts the spotlight as much on meat and fish as on vegetables, always with a view to eco-responsible cuisine. An experience combining good food, good atmosphere and good prices awaits you!

Hortus is the proud owner of two green rooftop gardens located in the heart of Vieux-Québec, right above you! Our crops are quintessential part of your meal.

Our chef Stéphane Roth harvesting fresh vegetables from our roof.

Our gardens will provide some of the fruits and vegetables used in our recipes. Production being limited due to space constraint, we work closely with Quebec farmers who grow organic produce.

OUR BEES

We also own multiple beehives placed onto large strawberry fields at l’ole-d’orleans, home of our Oh Bio partner. Tree beehives are located on the rooftop of Hotel du Vieux Quebec and greatly improve the pollination of our gardens.

The importance of bees to biodiversity

Besides providing their beloved honey, bees are a fondamental part of every aspect linked to the ecosystem. Bees are the most important pollinators, close to 80%, therefore essential to flowering plants reproduction. They are also vital through food chain, considering that 35% of fruits and vegetables depend on pollination by insects

Review Summary

Bistro Hortus is widely recognized as a premier destination in Old Quebec, celebrated for its high-quality, farm-to-table cuisine and inclusive, entirely gluten-free menu. Guests frequently praise the fresh, locally sourced ingredients and creative dishes, with specific highlights including the pouding chomeur, goat cheese appetizers, and various duck preparations. While the atmosphere is consistently described as cozy, charming, and welcoming, with a beautiful terrace, the service is a standout feature for many, often characterized as attentive, professional, and exceptionally friendly. Although experiences regarding noise levels and certain menu experimentalism can vary, the restaurant remains a highly recommended spot for those with dietary restrictions and anyone seeking a flavorful, authentic dining experience in the heart of the city.

Excellent meal! We shared a few of the starters including the walleye tartare, deer pastry, local cheeses & bread, & onion soup. All delicious!
Service & ambience were great too. Kudos to all at Bistro Hortus!

Highly Recommend! This was the #1 best restaurant in all of Canada that we visited over our 3-week trip (though to be fair, some places were lobster-roll stands...). I wish we'd gone twice! The ambiance was casual, but nice (a mix of attire was observed), & we had a window seat so we could people-watch. I had two "appetizers"-- the cheese plate & the deer carpaccio. Hubby had the walleye tartare (wish we'd had the main dish for that to share!) & then the smoked trout (also fantastic). If you're in town just for a day or two, make it a point to get a reservation at Bistro Hortus. The dishes were creative- & tasty.

I would not have changed a thing in the 4 dishes we had (& shared). The cheeses were great- we did order the bread to have as a side, although the cheese plate came with "crackers" (I would have called it toasted bread pieces). The fruit compote (?) that it came with was delicious with the cheeses. The 2 breads were wonderful... & although I normally eat carpaccio on crackers, I did not for this dish. It was so wonderful in every aspect of the taste & "mouth feel" that I didn't want to dilute it with a cracker or bread.

Don't miss this gem! & don't be put off by the location, if you're visiting Quebec City & not staying nearby. We drove there by GPS, then looked for Parking signs. Even with some roads blocked off, we found easy parking a block away.

Our dinner at Bistro Hortus gave us a glimpse of what happens when French technique refines local ingredients into an inspired journey emphasizing the best flavors in seasonal root vegetables & alliums, as well as an innovative take on fresh red snapper. The restaurant is charming, intimate & allowed my wife & I to end our day walking around old Quebec in style. We would highly recommend it!!

Wonderful meal. I tried the rabbit special for the first time in my life. So tender & soft. I am now brave enough to order rabbit again. Thank you Bistro Hortus for expanding my pallet.

We were very pleasantly surprised by this Bistro. We thought it would be "nice" but it was much better than that. The food was excellent. The deconstructed onion soup was first class as was the chicken & vegetable lasagna. A nice variety, a relaxed atmosphere & attentive service. They deserve high marks for their great & fresh food as well as service. An all around great night out

Bistro Hortus is a lovely restaurant with a brilliant staff on the floor. Professional, friendly & engaged in what they are doing. Our server was knowledgeable about what this kitchen produces & how they do it & friendly in both English & French. The room itself is delightful, warm, engaging, yes, engaging & conducive to having a great evening out. The food is well thought out & prepared & presented originally. I had the deconstructed French onion soup & it was delicious. We shared Taro 'nachos' which we highly recommend & are very original. My partner had the char & I had one of the house classics, the chicken - both well executed & delish. We didn't have anything sweet to finish, but we did buy a couple of jars of honey made by their very own bees. If in Quebec City Bistro Hortus is well worth a visit.
