About

IN PHOTOS (pdf)

By combining freshness and creativity, the Bistro Hortus offers you a menu rich in local and organic products. For your greatest pleasure, chef Stéphane Roth presents a menu of the “Ferme à la Table” trend. With his unique cooking style, he puts the spotlight as much on meat and fish as on vegetables, always with a view to eco-responsible cuisine. An experience combining good food, good atmosphere and good prices awaits you!

Hortus is the proud owner of two green rooftop gardens located in the heart of Vieux-Québec, right above you! Our crops are quintessential part of your meal.

Our chef Stéphane Roth harvesting fresh vegetables from our roof.

Our gardens will provide some of the fruits and vegetables used in our recipes. Production being limited due to space constraint, we work closely with Quebec farmers who grow organic produce.

OUR BEES

We also own multiple beehives placed onto large strawberry fields at l’ole-d’orleans, home of our Oh Bio partner. Tree beehives are located on the rooftop of Hotel du Vieux Quebec and greatly improve the pollination of our gardens.

The importance of bees to biodiversity

Besides providing their beloved honey, bees are a fondamental part of every aspect linked to the ecosystem. Bees are the most important pollinators, close to 80%, therefore essential to flowering plants reproduction. They are also vital through food chain, considering that 35% of fruits and vegetables depend on pollination by insects

Review Summary

Bistro Hortus is widely recognized as a premier destination in Old Quebec, celebrated for its high-quality, farm-to-table cuisine and inclusive, entirely gluten-free menu. Guests frequently praise the fresh, locally sourced ingredients and creative dishes, with specific highlights including the pouding chomeur, goat cheese appetizers, and various duck preparations. While the atmosphere is consistently described as cozy, charming, and welcoming, with a beautiful terrace, the service is a standout feature for many, often characterized as attentive, professional, and exceptionally friendly. Although experiences regarding noise levels and certain menu experimentalism can vary, the restaurant remains a highly recommended spot for those with dietary restrictions and anyone seeking a flavorful, authentic dining experience in the heart of the city.

I was delighted to find a GF restaurant that served toutiere, a favorite from my childhood. It was party of a brunch plate, & was AMAZING. The whole meal was exceptional

Awesome weekend brunch out on the terrasse. Each main course was served with in-house made side dishes. The homemade yogurt & granola were a lovely start to the meal. The accompanying organic strawberries & blueberries were bursting with fresh sweet flavour. We enjoyed breads & house-made jam & fried potatoes with our main. Eggs perfectly cooked, buckwheat waffle, bacon roti, & guinea fowl sausage were some of the items comprising our delicious main courses. Everything was wonderful, including the service. We'd recommend this resto. When we return, we'd like to try the lunch/dinner menu. The resto also has vegetarian & gluten-free options. Updated 2024 August Lovely as usual. Excellent Hortus Spritz. 3 course lunch menu. We had poutine & the Guinea fowl sausage. Great tastes of farm to table ingredients. Maple fudge dessert a sweet ending. Nice patio with great views. See last four photos.

This was the best gluten free brunch I have had in the seven years I have been celiac. Amazing service & large portion sizes. Service was incredible.

My family & I came here for brunch while on vacation. This was our favorite meal of the trip. To start, we were warmly welcomed. The decor was modern, cozy & clean, & featured photos from Hortus' rooftop aviary & gardens. There were frames of honeycomb on display, including a honeycomb to sample. I had the brunch poutine, which was fabulous & very filling. My family members had the burger, the veggie burger, & pot au fou. Everyone was happy with their dishes. The home made condiments came in cute little glass jars. The wine selection was good, & I enjoyed my "Bloody Hortus" cocktail. We'll be coming here again next time we're in Quebec.

We had the pot au feu which was very good, the vegetable sauté which was good but a bit oily (see additional photo), the Quebecois Brunch which was good but had a hair in the egg & the Hortus burger which was very bland. Service was good. Coffee was not good. Atmosphere was ok but a bit calm even though we went during the Carnival of Quebec. No parking & a bit pricey but it's to be expected since it's located in the vieux Québec.

We spent 9 days in Quebéc. We ate at Bistro Hortus 4 of those days because it was so good. They have the best hot chocolate in the city, their brunches are incredible, & they allowed us to do takeout on our busy first night there when other restaurants told us no. The service was always attentive, but the food was the star of the show. We already can't wait to visit again!
