About

IN PHOTOS (pdf)

By combining freshness and creativity, the Bistro Hortus offers you a menu rich in local and organic products. For your greatest pleasure, chef Stéphane Roth presents a menu of the “Ferme à la Table” trend. With his unique cooking style, he puts the spotlight as much on meat and fish as on vegetables, always with a view to eco-responsible cuisine. An experience combining good food, good atmosphere and good prices awaits you!

Hortus is the proud owner of two green rooftop gardens located in the heart of Vieux-Québec, right above you! Our crops are quintessential part of your meal.

Our chef Stéphane Roth harvesting fresh vegetables from our roof.

Our gardens will provide some of the fruits and vegetables used in our recipes. Production being limited due to space constraint, we work closely with Quebec farmers who grow organic produce.

OUR BEES

We also own multiple beehives placed onto large strawberry fields at l’ole-d’orleans, home of our Oh Bio partner. Tree beehives are located on the rooftop of Hotel du Vieux Quebec and greatly improve the pollination of our gardens.

The importance of bees to biodiversity

Besides providing their beloved honey, bees are a fondamental part of every aspect linked to the ecosystem. Bees are the most important pollinators, close to 80%, therefore essential to flowering plants reproduction. They are also vital through food chain, considering that 35% of fruits and vegetables depend on pollination by insects

Review Summary

Bistro Hortus is widely recognized as a premier destination in Old Quebec, celebrated for its high-quality, farm-to-table cuisine and inclusive, entirely gluten-free menu. Guests frequently praise the fresh, locally sourced ingredients and creative dishes, with specific highlights including the pouding chomeur, goat cheese appetizers, and various duck preparations. While the atmosphere is consistently described as cozy, charming, and welcoming, with a beautiful terrace, the service is a standout feature for many, often characterized as attentive, professional, and exceptionally friendly. Although experiences regarding noise levels and certain menu experimentalism can vary, the restaurant remains a highly recommended spot for those with dietary restrictions and anyone seeking a flavorful, authentic dining experience in the heart of the city.

Friendly service & fantastic food, provided by their rooftop garden & beehives. The Hortus burger was just the right size, tasty, & perfectly cooked to order with fries (or your choice of side) & a salad that was also fresh & delicious! I also enjoyed the maple ice cream with black currant biscuit which was simply delectable & paired very well with the Cafe Quebecois. I was at this location six years ago & have been thinking about it ever since. This experience did not disappoint. In fact, it may have even exceeded my expectations based on memory. I absolutely recommend stopping in for dinner or brunch whenever you're in town.

We planned a big food tour of all the restaurants based on reviews & menus all week. We were excited to try their brunch. As a foodie this was Disappointing mostly because of service. I wish we went somewhere else. Their menu is described as follows... at the door, on their website & the menu handed to you.

All brunch plates are served with: yogurt & homemade granola, mimosa alarm clock, organic rattes potatoes, organic fruits of Quebec, organic breads with cream of wheat, homemade jam, filter coffee or green tea. In addition you can choose one of 6 dish selections.

We were NOT offered yoghurt or granola, potatoes, bread or jams or coffee. I even had to ask for coffee. We did receive fruits & the mimosas. The coffee was watery & disappointing. No one came by for refills. The fruits offered were some bruised Macintosh apples & cantaloupe that looked like they were cut with a serrated knife.

Restaurants should not advertise what they do not offer.

I think the servers need to be educated & understand the menu because service is important. More importantly management should oversee the service if it's important to them for customer satisfaction. The only disappointment in our Quebec City dining experience.
