About

IN PHOTOS (pdf)

By combining freshness and creativity, the Bistro Hortus offers you a menu rich in local and organic products. For your greatest pleasure, chef Stéphane Roth presents a menu of the “Ferme à la Table” trend. With his unique cooking style, he puts the spotlight as much on meat and fish as on vegetables, always with a view to eco-responsible cuisine. An experience combining good food, good atmosphere and good prices awaits you!

Hortus is the proud owner of two green rooftop gardens located in the heart of Vieux-Québec, right above you! Our crops are quintessential part of your meal.

Our chef Stéphane Roth harvesting fresh vegetables from our roof.

Our gardens will provide some of the fruits and vegetables used in our recipes. Production being limited due to space constraint, we work closely with Quebec farmers who grow organic produce.

OUR BEES

We also own multiple beehives placed onto large strawberry fields at l’ole-d’orleans, home of our Oh Bio partner. Tree beehives are located on the rooftop of Hotel du Vieux Quebec and greatly improve the pollination of our gardens.

The importance of bees to biodiversity

Besides providing their beloved honey, bees are a fondamental part of every aspect linked to the ecosystem. Bees are the most important pollinators, close to 80%, therefore essential to flowering plants reproduction. They are also vital through food chain, considering that 35% of fruits and vegetables depend on pollination by insects

Review Summary

Bistro Hortus is widely recognized as a premier destination in Old Quebec, celebrated for its high-quality, farm-to-table cuisine and inclusive, entirely gluten-free menu. Guests frequently praise the fresh, locally sourced ingredients and creative dishes, with specific highlights including the pouding chomeur, goat cheese appetizers, and various duck preparations. While the atmosphere is consistently described as cozy, charming, and welcoming, with a beautiful terrace, the service is a standout feature for many, often characterized as attentive, professional, and exceptionally friendly. Although experiences regarding noise levels and certain menu experimentalism can vary, the restaurant remains a highly recommended spot for those with dietary restrictions and anyone seeking a flavorful, authentic dining experience in the heart of the city.

This was the best gluten free brunch I have had in the seven years I have been celiac. Amazing service & large portion sizes. Service was incredible.

Definitely a 4.8 out of 5 experience for this celiac gal. Menus in both French & English which is nice since my son isn't fluent yet. Kudos to the chef, food was divine & on point. Presentation was lovely for the type of establishment. Taste was good, but slightly too fatty for my liking. Just preference, nothing bad. I would have preferred if the music was slightly lower. It was difficult for us to hear one another with all the patrons inside. My farm to table dish was incredibly delicious. It came to $60 (market price) My son had the poutine & ate it all. Both were completely gluten free meals. I had a delicious herbal mint tea to finish the meal, & my son enjoyed a gluten free, chocolate cake. He really enjoyed it! Merci, c'était un vrai plaisir de goûter & bien manger hors de la maison en sécurité!

Wonderful brunch spot & so rewarding to have gluten-free food that was so delicious you would never know. Bonus bread & jam! In a city full of great restaurants, I would put Bistro Hortus near the top - celiac or not!

It was an exceptional dining experience in a city with great cuisine. As someone who is Celiac, it was very enjoyable, given the focus on gluten free options & precautions. I don't remember her name, but our waitress was very attentive & helpful with suggestions. We will definitely be back for another meal!

Fantastic food, with many gluten free choices. Knowledgeable, intuitive & friendly young bartender. Warm & friendly atmosphere. Ate there both nights we were in town. Recommend highly.

If you follow a gluten free diet you've just found the best restaurant in Old Quebec. The food was excellent. I ordered the vegan vegetarian stir-fry & it was delicious. The lavender rose (non alcoholic drink was very good as well).
