About

IN PHOTOS (pdf)

By combining freshness and creativity, the Bistro Hortus offers you a menu rich in local and organic products. For your greatest pleasure, chef Stéphane Roth presents a menu of the “Ferme à la Table” trend. With his unique cooking style, he puts the spotlight as much on meat and fish as on vegetables, always with a view to eco-responsible cuisine. An experience combining good food, good atmosphere and good prices awaits you!

Hortus is the proud owner of two green rooftop gardens located in the heart of Vieux-Québec, right above you! Our crops are quintessential part of your meal.

Our chef Stéphane Roth harvesting fresh vegetables from our roof.

Our gardens will provide some of the fruits and vegetables used in our recipes. Production being limited due to space constraint, we work closely with Quebec farmers who grow organic produce.

OUR BEES

We also own multiple beehives placed onto large strawberry fields at l’ole-d’orleans, home of our Oh Bio partner. Tree beehives are located on the rooftop of Hotel du Vieux Quebec and greatly improve the pollination of our gardens.

The importance of bees to biodiversity

Besides providing their beloved honey, bees are a fondamental part of every aspect linked to the ecosystem. Bees are the most important pollinators, close to 80%, therefore essential to flowering plants reproduction. They are also vital through food chain, considering that 35% of fruits and vegetables depend on pollination by insects

Review Summary

Bistro Hortus is widely recognized as a premier destination in Old Quebec, celebrated for its high-quality, farm-to-table cuisine and inclusive, entirely gluten-free menu. Guests frequently praise the fresh, locally sourced ingredients and creative dishes, with specific highlights including the pouding chomeur, goat cheese appetizers, and various duck preparations. While the atmosphere is consistently described as cozy, charming, and welcoming, with a beautiful terrace, the service is a standout feature for many, often characterized as attentive, professional, and exceptionally friendly. Although experiences regarding noise levels and certain menu experimentalism can vary, the restaurant remains a highly recommended spot for those with dietary restrictions and anyone seeking a flavorful, authentic dining experience in the heart of the city.

Plenty of gluten free options, including GF bread. My husband (who does not eat GF) said the burger bun was the best he had ever eaten - & it was GF! A pleasant surprise. I enjoyed the first bowl of French onion soup I've eaten in 15 years since being diagnosed with celiac.

(This is the review I used for a gluten free app that had originally recommended your restaurant. I also put the review on yelp. You are doing a wonderful job - thank you)

Amazing! The food was delicious & creative. There were many gluten free choices - all marked clearly on the menu. There were even 4 dessert choices!

I am known for the salads I make. I had the Chevrotiere Salad which was incredible - full of veggies, cheese & a delicious salad dressing. It was topped with gluten free cranberry bread & goat cheese. My husband, who is not gluten free, had the Vegetable Pot Au Feu, which is gluten free, & loved it.

The restaurant is beautiful & very cool. The waitstaff was fun & wonderful. They use locally sourced organic food.

We are going back to the Hortus Bistro before we leave Quebec. I wish we had one of these restaurants near me 😊

Great ambience - ate ai bit later than we would have liked as the restaurant was busy. Appreciated the understanding of gluten free by the waitress - we chose it for the gluten free options. Food was tasty & good value for money.

Lots of gluten free options which was amazing for someone with an allergy. The onion soup was to die for but the cassolette de la mer was pretty pricey for what you got. Overall delicious food!
