About

IN PHOTOS (pdf)

By combining freshness and creativity, the Bistro Hortus offers you a menu rich in local and organic products. For your greatest pleasure, chef Stéphane Roth presents a menu of the “Ferme à la Table” trend. With his unique cooking style, he puts the spotlight as much on meat and fish as on vegetables, always with a view to eco-responsible cuisine. An experience combining good food, good atmosphere and good prices awaits you!

Hortus is the proud owner of two green rooftop gardens located in the heart of Vieux-Québec, right above you! Our crops are quintessential part of your meal.

Our chef Stéphane Roth harvesting fresh vegetables from our roof.

Our gardens will provide some of the fruits and vegetables used in our recipes. Production being limited due to space constraint, we work closely with Quebec farmers who grow organic produce.

OUR BEES

We also own multiple beehives placed onto large strawberry fields at l’ole-d’orleans, home of our Oh Bio partner. Tree beehives are located on the rooftop of Hotel du Vieux Quebec and greatly improve the pollination of our gardens.

The importance of bees to biodiversity

Besides providing their beloved honey, bees are a fondamental part of every aspect linked to the ecosystem. Bees are the most important pollinators, close to 80%, therefore essential to flowering plants reproduction. They are also vital through food chain, considering that 35% of fruits and vegetables depend on pollination by insects

Review Summary

Bistro Hortus is widely recognized as a premier destination in Old Quebec, celebrated for its high-quality, farm-to-table cuisine and inclusive, entirely gluten-free menu. Guests frequently praise the fresh, locally sourced ingredients and creative dishes, with specific highlights including the pouding chomeur, goat cheese appetizers, and various duck preparations. While the atmosphere is consistently described as cozy, charming, and welcoming, with a beautiful terrace, the service is a standout feature for many, often characterized as attentive, professional, and exceptionally friendly. Although experiences regarding noise levels and certain menu experimentalism can vary, the restaurant remains a highly recommended spot for those with dietary restrictions and anyone seeking a flavorful, authentic dining experience in the heart of the city.

Fresh ingredients & delicious food! I would recommend getting the pudding with maple ice cream for dessert.

Awesome weekend brunch out on the terrasse. Each main course was served with in-house made side dishes. The homemade yogurt & granola were a lovely start to the meal. The accompanying organic strawberries & blueberries were bursting with fresh sweet flavour. We enjoyed breads & house-made jam & fried potatoes with our main. Eggs perfectly cooked, buckwheat waffle, bacon roti, & guinea fowl sausage were some of the items comprising our delicious main courses. Everything was wonderful, including the service. We'd recommend this resto. When we return, we'd like to try the lunch/dinner menu. The resto also has vegetarian & gluten-free options. Updated 2024 August Lovely as usual. Excellent Hortus Spritz. 3 course lunch menu. We had poutine & the Guinea fowl sausage. Great tastes of farm to table ingredients. Maple fudge dessert a sweet ending. Nice patio with great views. See last four photos.

All the ingredients are locally sourced & seasonal. The dishes are well seasoned & beautifully plated. It is in a tourist area of the city, along a row of restaurants & stores great for people watching.

Dropped in for brunch around 10am on a Saturday & was able to get a table right away. It looks like they focus on organic ingredients & duck eggs (rather than chicken). Their brunch includes a yogurt parfait, toast with butter & marmalade, roasted potatoes & fruit salad. This was a surprising addition! Both of our dishes were incredibly. Our duck eggs were cooked to perfection & everything just melded so well. I loved it all but weirdly enough the bread + butter/marmalade was my favorite. You can tell the ingredients are great quality. The service was really great as well. Everyone was so nice & polite. I also loved sitting by the window & watching the beautiful bustling street

Très beau resto & un super service! J'ai mangé la poutine déjeuner. Elle était bonne, mais le fromage & les patates étaient décevants. Le reste des ingrédients dans la poutine était très bon!! Le café whisky était excellent !

a lovely restaurant with great food & great service. the deer cappacio was quite an experience. a thoughtful selection of ingredients came together pretty well. the cocktail something sauvage was good but a bit too watery; you’ll could barely feel the gin. overall would come back & try other dishes.
