About

IN PHOTOS (pdf)

By combining freshness and creativity, the Bistro Hortus offers you a menu rich in local and organic products. For your greatest pleasure, chef Stéphane Roth presents a menu of the “Ferme à la Table” trend. With his unique cooking style, he puts the spotlight as much on meat and fish as on vegetables, always with a view to eco-responsible cuisine. An experience combining good food, good atmosphere and good prices awaits you!

Hortus is the proud owner of two green rooftop gardens located in the heart of Vieux-Québec, right above you! Our crops are quintessential part of your meal.

Our chef Stéphane Roth harvesting fresh vegetables from our roof.

Our gardens will provide some of the fruits and vegetables used in our recipes. Production being limited due to space constraint, we work closely with Quebec farmers who grow organic produce.

OUR BEES

We also own multiple beehives placed onto large strawberry fields at l’ole-d’orleans, home of our Oh Bio partner. Tree beehives are located on the rooftop of Hotel du Vieux Quebec and greatly improve the pollination of our gardens.

The importance of bees to biodiversity

Besides providing their beloved honey, bees are a fondamental part of every aspect linked to the ecosystem. Bees are the most important pollinators, close to 80%, therefore essential to flowering plants reproduction. They are also vital through food chain, considering that 35% of fruits and vegetables depend on pollination by insects

Review Summary

Bistro Hortus is widely recognized as a premier destination in Old Quebec, celebrated for its high-quality, farm-to-table cuisine and inclusive, entirely gluten-free menu. Guests frequently praise the fresh, locally sourced ingredients and creative dishes, with specific highlights including the pouding chomeur, goat cheese appetizers, and various duck preparations. While the atmosphere is consistently described as cozy, charming, and welcoming, with a beautiful terrace, the service is a standout feature for many, often characterized as attentive, professional, and exceptionally friendly. Although experiences regarding noise levels and certain menu experimentalism can vary, the restaurant remains a highly recommended spot for those with dietary restrictions and anyone seeking a flavorful, authentic dining experience in the heart of the city.

Wonderful ambience. Delicious food made of locally grown ingredients in a beautiful presentation. Our waitress was very attentive, did a great job of explaining the menu & helped us choose an appropriate wine to go with our meal. Loved the deer carpaccio & walleye tartare.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Bistro Hortus, & I must say that it was an exceptional experience. From the moment I walked in, I was impressed by the warm & inviting atmosphere of the restaurant. The ambiance was cozy & charming, setting the perfect tone for a delightful meal.

The food at Bistro Hortus was nothing short of amazing. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared, & it was evident that the chefs took great care in selecting the finest ingredients. The menu offered a variety of options, & I was thrilled with the flavorful combinations presented in each course.

However, what truly elevated my dining experience was the impeccable service provided by Livia. She was not only attentive & friendly but also incredibly knowledgeable about the menus, ingredients, & preparation methods. Her passion for the culinary arts shone through as she described each dish with enthusiasm, making it easy to make our selections.

But Livia's exceptional service didn't stop there. She went above & beyond to enhance our visit by taking the time to provide recommendations for places to visit & experience on the island of Île d'Orléans. Her insider tips added an extra layer of enjoyment to our trip, as we followed her suggestions the next day & fell in love with the island.

In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend dining at Bistro Hortus. The food is exceptional, the atmosphere is charming, & the service, particularly from Livia, is outstanding. Whether you're a local or a visitor, this restaurant is a must-visit, & I guarantee that you'll leave with a memorable culinary experience.

The quality of the ingredients was superb. However we were both disappointed with the lack of flavour of the fillet mignon & the salmon. Service was superb albeit the wait between the starter & main course was too long.

Great spot in Old Quebec for a dinner featuring local cuisine & ingredients at a reasonable price. The menu incorporates good ingredients in some delicious & non traditional ways. The martinis are excellent.

Our dinner at Bistro Hortus gave us a glimpse of what happens when French technique refines local ingredients into an inspired journey emphasizing the best flavors in seasonal root vegetables & alliums, as well as an innovative take on fresh red snapper. The restaurant is charming, intimate & allowed my wife & I to end our day walking around old Quebec in style. We would highly recommend it!!

Service excellent. Les plats respectaient les ingrédients mentionnés mais semblaient avoir été montés un peu à la va vite par n'importe qui. Peu d'assaisonnements, peu d'intérêt!
