About

IN PHOTOS (pdf)

By combining freshness and creativity, the Bistro Hortus offers you a menu rich in local and organic products. For your greatest pleasure, chef Stéphane Roth presents a menu of the “Ferme à la Table” trend. With his unique cooking style, he puts the spotlight as much on meat and fish as on vegetables, always with a view to eco-responsible cuisine. An experience combining good food, good atmosphere and good prices awaits you!

Hortus is the proud owner of two green rooftop gardens located in the heart of Vieux-Québec, right above you! Our crops are quintessential part of your meal.

Our chef Stéphane Roth harvesting fresh vegetables from our roof.

Our gardens will provide some of the fruits and vegetables used in our recipes. Production being limited due to space constraint, we work closely with Quebec farmers who grow organic produce.

OUR BEES

We also own multiple beehives placed onto large strawberry fields at l’ole-d’orleans, home of our Oh Bio partner. Tree beehives are located on the rooftop of Hotel du Vieux Quebec and greatly improve the pollination of our gardens.

The importance of bees to biodiversity

Besides providing their beloved honey, bees are a fondamental part of every aspect linked to the ecosystem. Bees are the most important pollinators, close to 80%, therefore essential to flowering plants reproduction. They are also vital through food chain, considering that 35% of fruits and vegetables depend on pollination by insects

Review Summary

Bistro Hortus is widely recognized as a premier destination in Old Quebec, celebrated for its high-quality, farm-to-table cuisine and inclusive, entirely gluten-free menu. Guests frequently praise the fresh, locally sourced ingredients and creative dishes, with specific highlights including the pouding chomeur, goat cheese appetizers, and various duck preparations. While the atmosphere is consistently described as cozy, charming, and welcoming, with a beautiful terrace, the service is a standout feature for many, often characterized as attentive, professional, and exceptionally friendly. Although experiences regarding noise levels and certain menu experimentalism can vary, the restaurant remains a highly recommended spot for those with dietary restrictions and anyone seeking a flavorful, authentic dining experience in the heart of the city.

En court : superbe resto, vas-y. Ma blonde est coeliaque, donc ça limite nos options en termes de bouffe à Québec, mais quand on as appris que Hortus est 100% sans gluten, on était sul' cul ! C'est devenu notre "go to".

This restaurant had it all! I came here specifically because of the completely gluten free menu, but this restaurant goes far beyond just a gluten free option for dining. The food was dynamic, fresh, & inventive. We loved the thought into each dish we ordered, & the story behind the produce & selection of products. I would say this was one of our favorite meals on our trip. We ordered the bread basket, deer carpaccio, french onion soup, & the beef option. Highly highly recommend stopping by here on your next visit, gluten free or not.

Awsome location! But the best part is the menu. Everything is gluten-free, with vegan & vegetarian options. Oh, & the service is excellent too!

Awesome weekend brunch out on the terrasse. Each main course was served with in-house made side dishes. The homemade yogurt & granola were a lovely start to the meal. The accompanying organic strawberries & blueberries were bursting with fresh sweet flavour. We enjoyed breads & house-made jam & fried potatoes with our main. Eggs perfectly cooked, buckwheat waffle, bacon roti, & guinea fowl sausage were some of the items comprising our delicious main courses. Everything was wonderful, including the service. We'd recommend this resto. When we return, we'd like to try the lunch/dinner menu. The resto also has vegetarian & gluten-free options. Updated 2024 August Lovely as usual. Excellent Hortus Spritz. 3 course lunch menu. We had poutine & the Guinea fowl sausage. Great tastes of farm to table ingredients. Maple fudge dessert a sweet ending. Nice patio with great views. See last four photos.

Beautiful spot in a busy part of Old Quebec. Picturesque, but definitely not a tourist trap. The food is all local & seasonal, with plenty of options for everyone, from seafood to meat plates to vegetarian. Everything seemed to be gluten free. The plating is gorgeous & every bite we had was delicious. Great cocktails & mocktails. The service was also very friendly. Highly recommend

Today I went with my family to dinner at the restaurant. We didn't have a reservation, but Eve promptly seated us at a table in a very pleasant location. We were very well looked after, impeccable service. Eve gave us all assistance in English, as we don't speak French. we were very pleased with the dinner, the service & the atmosphere. Furthermore, two people in our group cannot eat foods with gluten, & this was not a problem, as the menu has several options for restricted diets.

There were no vegan options ☹️

There were only a few vegan options but they were all delicious. Would appreciate having more, but for Quebec it was great. Bonus points for the vegan chocolate cake!!
