About

IN PHOTOS (pdf)

By combining freshness and creativity, the Bistro Hortus offers you a menu rich in local and organic products. For your greatest pleasure, chef Stéphane Roth presents a menu of the “Ferme à la Table” trend. With his unique cooking style, he puts the spotlight as much on meat and fish as on vegetables, always with a view to eco-responsible cuisine. An experience combining good food, good atmosphere and good prices awaits you!

Hortus is the proud owner of two green rooftop gardens located in the heart of Vieux-Québec, right above you! Our crops are quintessential part of your meal.

Our chef Stéphane Roth harvesting fresh vegetables from our roof.

Our gardens will provide some of the fruits and vegetables used in our recipes. Production being limited due to space constraint, we work closely with Quebec farmers who grow organic produce.

OUR BEES

We also own multiple beehives placed onto large strawberry fields at l’ole-d’orleans, home of our Oh Bio partner. Tree beehives are located on the rooftop of Hotel du Vieux Quebec and greatly improve the pollination of our gardens.

The importance of bees to biodiversity

Besides providing their beloved honey, bees are a fondamental part of every aspect linked to the ecosystem. Bees are the most important pollinators, close to 80%, therefore essential to flowering plants reproduction. They are also vital through food chain, considering that 35% of fruits and vegetables depend on pollination by insects

Review Summary

Bistro Hortus is highly regarded for its fresh, farm-to-table cuisine and its inclusive menu, which is entirely gluten-free and accommodating to various dietary needs. Visitors frequently praise the diverse and flavorful dishes, with highlights including the onion soup, duck poutine, and the popular maple-infused desserts. While the restaurant offers a cozy and pleasant atmosphere both indoors and on the patio, the consistently attentive and friendly service is often cited as a standout aspect of the overall dining experience. It is a popular destination for both locals and travelers, providing a reliable and enjoyable environment for brunch, lunch, or dinner in the heart of the city.

I am a vegetarian. I started the meal with the vegetable soup of the day which was good . I had the vegetable pot au feu which was a bland bowl of steamed root vegetables for $30. Perhaps the other vegetarian dishes are better & maybe the non vegetarian dishes are worth it.

Ambience was nice. Friendly staff. Good location. French onion soup was good but not hot. Cheese not melted. Salad was very large & good. Could use less green more nuts fruit cheese etc in salad. Poutine was ok. Food was not hot. Fries room temp. Good amount of meat. Good presentation.

Excellent meal! We shared a few of the starters including the walleye tartare, deer pastry, local cheeses & bread, & onion soup. All delicious!
Service & ambience were great too. Kudos to all at Bistro Hortus!

This was the only disappointing meal we had in 8 days in Québec & Montréal. The soup du jour was fine (nothing special), but the deconstructed onion soup was a sludge of onion with no broth & couldn't melt the cheese; the lobster sauce with the seafood cassolette lacked flavor; the beef poutine was served lukewarm, with cold cheese curds & burnt shards of potato that looked more like bones than like French fries. Two stars because the maple ice cream was excellent, though the blueberry shortbread served with it was more like hardtack than shortbread. The side salad was very good but served in a tiny flowerpot that was cute but made it messy to eat (no salad plate, & transferring salad leaves to a bowl of cassolette or poutine was out of the question). The setting was charming & we appreciated the sound barriers between side tables. Service was friendly but inattentive; our waiter didn't seem to notice that my mother had barely touched her poutine, & left salad leaves on the table after clearing the plates even when bringing the dessert.

Very charming atmosphere. The deconstructed onion soup was excellent & our mains were very enjoyable & well presented. This is now one of our ‘go to' restaurants in the Old Town.
