About

IN PHOTOS (pdf)

By combining freshness and creativity, the Bistro Hortus offers you a menu rich in local and organic products. For your greatest pleasure, chef Stéphane Roth presents a menu of the “Ferme à la Table” trend. With his unique cooking style, he puts the spotlight as much on meat and fish as on vegetables, always with a view to eco-responsible cuisine. An experience combining good food, good atmosphere and good prices awaits you!

Hortus is the proud owner of two green rooftop gardens located in the heart of Vieux-Québec, right above you! Our crops are quintessential part of your meal.

Our chef Stéphane Roth harvesting fresh vegetables from our roof.

Our gardens will provide some of the fruits and vegetables used in our recipes. Production being limited due to space constraint, we work closely with Quebec farmers who grow organic produce.

OUR BEES

We also own multiple beehives placed onto large strawberry fields at l’ole-d’orleans, home of our Oh Bio partner. Tree beehives are located on the rooftop of Hotel du Vieux Quebec and greatly improve the pollination of our gardens.

The importance of bees to biodiversity

Besides providing their beloved honey, bees are a fondamental part of every aspect linked to the ecosystem. Bees are the most important pollinators, close to 80%, therefore essential to flowering plants reproduction. They are also vital through food chain, considering that 35% of fruits and vegetables depend on pollination by insects

Review Summary

Bistro Hortus is widely recognized as a premier destination in Old Quebec, celebrated for its high-quality, farm-to-table cuisine and inclusive, entirely gluten-free menu. Guests frequently praise the fresh, locally sourced ingredients and creative dishes, with specific highlights including the pouding chomeur, goat cheese appetizers, and various duck preparations. While the atmosphere is consistently described as cozy, charming, and welcoming, with a beautiful terrace, the service is a standout feature for many, often characterized as attentive, professional, and exceptionally friendly. Although experiences regarding noise levels and certain menu experimentalism can vary, the restaurant remains a highly recommended spot for those with dietary restrictions and anyone seeking a flavorful, authentic dining experience in the heart of the city.

I ordered the French onion soup & a side salad. My dinner date ordered the burger, fries & salad. First off the wine selection by the glass was minimal. Not a lot of selection. Ordered the bread & that was good with the thyme butter. My soup, well it was underwhelming. First it was not hot second & most importantly it had no flavor
My companions burger was ordered med well & it was over done It was dry, the bun was just strange in that it was hard & fell apart. The fries were limp. Salas came in a flower pot which was a cute presentation but impossible to eat. Overall I would not recommend.

I made a reservation here because we're staying at the hotel where the restaurant is located. I figured it would be very convenient when we arrived that we didn't have to worry about going too far for dinner. Just in case we arrive later the restaurant would be very convenient for us. We both shared the goat cheese appetizer. It was absolutely delicious & we could've eaten more! My partner didn't want to eat too heavy, so he chose the curry vegetable entrée which he really enjoyed & I had the smoky barbecue chicken breast, I was looking to eat lighter. It was loaded with lots of extra vegetables & everything was very good. The chicken was very flavorful & moist. We decided to pass on dessert because we were both very full. The restaurant was very full when we first walked in. It's nice to see a good crowd in a restaurant.

The drinks were great, the food wasn't. Please stay away from the nachos.

The goats cheese starter with the bread bowl was an excellent starter to share with the best goats cheese I have had outside of London & Paris. Our mains were also delicious & we had the fish tartare & the lasagne. Not cheap but Highly recommended

We wandering in on a Wednesday night, it was not crowded. Ate dinner inside, the rooms were smaller so the noise level was lower than you would expect. Our meal was delicious. We had French onion soup. Pickled whitefish & vegetarian curry. This is a farm to table restaurant, food was delicious. I would visit again!

Perhaps the best restaurant in QC. Food, drinks, service, vibe… all amazing! It all felt fresh, clean, & intentional. Loved that everything was gluten free in such a gluten-heavy place. I nearly cried eating the pouding chomeur. Don't sleep on this spot. De premier ordre!
