About

IN PHOTOS (pdf)

By combining freshness and creativity, the Bistro Hortus offers you a menu rich in local and organic products. For your greatest pleasure, chef Stéphane Roth presents a menu of the “Ferme à la Table” trend. With his unique cooking style, he puts the spotlight as much on meat and fish as on vegetables, always with a view to eco-responsible cuisine. An experience combining good food, good atmosphere and good prices awaits you!

Hortus is the proud owner of two green rooftop gardens located in the heart of Vieux-Québec, right above you! Our crops are quintessential part of your meal.

Our chef Stéphane Roth harvesting fresh vegetables from our roof.

Our gardens will provide some of the fruits and vegetables used in our recipes. Production being limited due to space constraint, we work closely with Quebec farmers who grow organic produce.

OUR BEES

We also own multiple beehives placed onto large strawberry fields at l’ole-d’orleans, home of our Oh Bio partner. Tree beehives are located on the rooftop of Hotel du Vieux Quebec and greatly improve the pollination of our gardens.

The importance of bees to biodiversity

Besides providing their beloved honey, bees are a fondamental part of every aspect linked to the ecosystem. Bees are the most important pollinators, close to 80%, therefore essential to flowering plants reproduction. They are also vital through food chain, considering that 35% of fruits and vegetables depend on pollination by insects

Review Summary

Bistro Hortus is widely recognized as a premier destination in Old Quebec, celebrated for its high-quality, farm-to-table cuisine and inclusive, entirely gluten-free menu. Guests frequently praise the fresh, locally sourced ingredients and creative dishes, with specific highlights including the pouding chomeur, goat cheese appetizers, and various duck preparations. While the atmosphere is consistently described as cozy, charming, and welcoming, with a beautiful terrace, the service is a standout feature for many, often characterized as attentive, professional, and exceptionally friendly. Although experiences regarding noise levels and certain menu experimentalism can vary, the restaurant remains a highly recommended spot for those with dietary restrictions and anyone seeking a flavorful, authentic dining experience in the heart of the city.

Like most bistros the things to order are not many. But what Bistro Hortus offers does delight. Took a chance on Boxing Day & we were handsomely rewarded. My two teens had the breakfast poutine with duck eggs. Tasted more like an elegant stew. My wife got the salmon with lobster bisque. "Mmmmm's" were heard throughout. I had the duck egg omelet with Quebec mushrooms & a refreshing salad. Hit the spot. My oldest treated themselves to a hot chocolate that featured ganache, maple foam, & homemade marshmallows. If in Old Quebec, definitely worth your time.

Everyone--children & adults--enjoyed their meal immensely. Celiacs should not miss this restaurant. Everything on the menu is gluten-free. I especially enjoyed the halibut, the caramel cake with maple ice cream, & the assortment of sweet & savory breads. My child declared their veggie burger superlative. The cozy ambience & convenient location makes this a perfect stop on your tour of Old Quebec.

Found this by accident off the street. Was freezing outside & just ran to the closest spot I could find after the other restaurant I wanted to go to was full. What a great find, I'm happy how it worked out! Didn't have reservations obviously so I sat at the bar - service & food was wonderful & very quick! I had an amaretto sour mocktail & the farm to table chef's creation which was a delicious bison steak with vegetables & currants. 10/10 recommend, worth the cost!
