At Honō, it happens in the gestures, and in the consistency of these gestures. As newcomers to the community, it is with respect that we make our place. Saint-Roch is like a team: we wear it proudly on our jersey, and when there are players who fall, we are there to reach out to them.
Speaking of respect: for us, respect is measured by the sum of the parts to which we decide to apply it, and this is what makes our integrity. Here there is no discrimination. Respect is applied everywhere: to traditions, to food, to customers and to their experience. Fla-fla in our decor, we don't want it. We do not try to influence the client by anything other than our thirst to perfect the fusion of Japanese and Quebec cultures.

Hono Izakaya provides an exceptional dining experience that frequently earns praise for its authentic Japanese small plates, expertly grilled yakitori, and vibrant atmosphere. Guests consistently highlight the quality and creative preparation of the dishes, with standout items such as the tender pork belly, marinated quail eggs, and flavorful ramen often receiving special mention. While the popular venue can be bustling and reservations are strongly recommended to secure a spot, the attentive and knowledgeable staff work hard to ensure a welcoming environment. Whether visitors are enjoying cocktails at the bar or sharing a variety of flavorful tapas, the combination of professional service, delicious food, and a warm, inviting setting makes it a highly regarded destination in Québec City.
Atmosphere was great. Lively & bustling. Service was slow. We had been seated for almost 40 minutes before we got our drinks & they came out after we got our first dish. I'd noted that one person in our party was allergic to gluten in the reservation. It was not until we were seated & had placed our drink order that the server mentioned the gluten allergy noted in the reservation & informed us there were very few GF options. This would have been helpful to know prior to being seated, or even before we got to the restaurant, since they obviously knew because they proactively mentioned it to us after we ordered our drinks, & especially since there was a question about allergies during the booking process. The food we did get was fine (& just fine); the miso sake was mushy (GF), the edamame overcooked (GF, took almost an hour to come out), but the pork shumai (not GF) were yummy. If you can eat gluten this would be a fun place to spend an evening but if not I wouldn't bother going unless you're not hungry (or thirsty, lol).
We had a great experience here, food was delicious, cocktails were amazing, & the staff were knowledgeable! The pork dumplings were amazing & the crème brûlée with miso was unique & delicious. We went on a Sunday night & it was full, I recommend getting a reservation ahead of time.
Chicken thigh, mushroom skewers & leeks were good. Miso marinated salmon was overdressed, pork belly was good but something felt amiss. The pork belly okonomiyaki was confusing. The components were there but not in proportion. A bit over "poutine-ized" nevertheless, would go back for the skewers.
As my tasting opinion, bowl with porc is relatively simple & good but I feel rather unbalanced to see the same shredded porc in the dumplings without added veggies or without any other ingredients that play good roles to be a dumpling. However, yakitori are as good as always, I recommend butabara & Tsukune with a glass of beer. 🍺 Perfect than ever. But miso soup taste so flat that need to be improved tasty more.
The dishes at this restaurant are generally delicious. The chicken in the Katsu Curry is tender, but it may upset sensitive stomachs. I wouldn't recommend the pork belly as it's quite fatty & can feel heavy. However, the chicken thigh is excellent with its tender & flavorful meat. The miso soup is a bit salty but tolerable. The King Eryngii mushroom is exceptional! I've never had such juicy & succulent mushrooms elsewhere. It's highly recommended! Also, besides the food, the service provided by the waiters is excellent. They are very patient.
My family & I were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. We typically prefer traditional Japanese food, & were a little wary about this restaurant at first. We ordered the edamame & found that furikake had been sprinkled on it along with lime juice - it was so good! The fried shiitake with the sesame mayonnaise was delicious, as was the karaage & wasabi mayonnaise. The miso saké was excellent. My husband & son ate the sashimi (because I'm not that keen on eating raw fish) & they thought it was OK. The shumai had some spiciness to it which I don't care for so they ate that too. My husband thought it was good, but he still expected the shumai to be more traditional. Next time we visit Quebec, we will be sure to go to this restaurant again!
