About

At Honō, it happens in the gestures, and in the consistency of these gestures. As newcomers to the community, it is with respect that we make our place. Saint-Roch is like a team: we wear it proudly on our jersey, and when there are players who fall, we are there to reach out to them.

Speaking of respect: for us, respect is measured by the sum of the parts to which we decide to apply it, and this is what makes our integrity. Here there is no discrimination. Respect is applied everywhere: to traditions, to food, to customers and to their experience. Fla-fla in our decor, we don't want it. We do not try to influence the client by anything other than our thirst to perfect the fusion of Japanese and Quebec cultures.

Review Summary

Hono Izakaya provides an exceptional dining experience that frequently earns praise for its authentic Japanese small plates, expertly grilled yakitori, and vibrant atmosphere. Guests consistently highlight the quality and creative preparation of the dishes, with standout items such as the tender pork belly, marinated quail eggs, and flavorful ramen often receiving special mention. While the popular venue can be bustling and reservations are strongly recommended to secure a spot, the attentive and knowledgeable staff work hard to ensure a welcoming environment. Whether visitors are enjoying cocktails at the bar or sharing a variety of flavorful tapas, the combination of professional service, delicious food, and a warm, inviting setting makes it a highly regarded destination in Québec City.

Relatively cozy environment for causal hangout, but the food taste is not matching its price. Menu is not very'Japanese', & food tastes overly salty.
Atmosphere is good though if you don't care about food, just want to have a cosy place to chat & drink.

Hono deserves all the accolades it's gotten. & no wonder why reservations are a must.
Beautiful warm space filled with tables for 2, big groups & counter seating in the back to watch all the action.
Plates are meant to be shared & to continuously order so that you're not left waiting too long for another amazing bite.
We tried mixing up yakitori with bowls so that we could get a variety.
In order of what we enjoyed were the
Butabara pork belly skewers (decadent & melt in your mouth) we ordered it twice ,
Pickled veggies (radish & cucumber) to cut through the fatty bits,
Chicken skin skewer (I don't know how it's not slippery oily & how they made it into squares, witchcraft, I swear)
Sashimi (yellow tail, butterfish, salmon) the seasonings they paired with each individual piece was so thoughtful. That Butterfish was buttering, yum!
Pork dumpling with chili sauce (perfect acidity & spice) I drank it up!
Miso & maple creme brulee (love the thick sugar crackling on top)
Pork rice bowl with miso soup (reminiscent of Japan's beef bowl with pickled ginger)
Quail eggs in dashi sauce (it was good, but there's no seasoning in the eggs)
Salmon shrimp croquette (good fried bite)
Chicken thigh skewer (moist, but it didn't have as much flavor as the other bites)

We thoroughly loved our food from beginning to end. Service was exceptional & kind. They were nice to explain in English everything we ordered.
We even loved the yuzu lemonade!
You can tell the chef thought very carefully about which pairing would be perfect & then elevated it even further.
It's like a love letter to Japan.
So happy to have ended our Quebec stay at Hono.

Loud & hip. Good food, but would be nice to have more vegetables. Duck hearts spectacular. Lamb, so-so. Get a reservation well in advance!

I had a really great time at this place! Never been to a Japanese tapas before, so it was unique & different from what I am used to. The food is tasty & the'waves' concept (where every dish comes slowly at a time) gave us time to talk over every dish & enjoy the different flavors. The few things we didn't like were: One, the restaurant's layout. It is a modern-style, small establishment with very very cramped seating. The tables are tiny & the room was packed to the brim with people. We were sitting so close to other customers, that if I had stretched both arms left & right, I would have been able to touch the strangers' shoulders. This is a big downside for us as it made it difficult to enjoy our conversation (very loud). Two, the very low lighting. I understand that it is the concept, but I like to be able to see my food when I eat. A slightly brighter room (not neon lighting, but at least light enough to see the colors of the dishes) would have made a big difference. & three, one of the dishes (the salmon skewers) was supposed to be medium rare. We got two skewers: one was completely raw & the other was grilled to medium. We don't like raw fish (& this dish isn't supposed to be raw anyways) & deliberately made a point to ask how it's supposed to be cooked before ordering it. It was clearly a mistake of timing on the grille, & the inconsistency between the two skewers is something that should never happen at such a highly rated place. That said, the waitress was very nice about the whole thing & gave us the next dish on the house, which we really appreciate. Still, it left a bad taste in our mouths. Another imperfection of the place was the inconsistent timing between dishes (although that can be expected when it is made to order). Finally, I will list my recommendations for specific dishes: 1. Chicken thigh skewers (amazing), 2. Duck hearts skewers (fantastic), 3. Quail eggs (very delicate), 4. Beef tataki (unique & new taste), & 5. Rice w/ pork (great taste)
