Review Summary

Iru Izakaya is generally regarded as a vibrant and welcoming destination that offers a unique Japanese dining experience. Most visitors praise the high-quality, flavorful food, particularly the sharing plates like gyoza, karaage, and takoyaki, as well as the popular discovery menus that allow guests to sample a variety of dishes. While the service is frequently described as professional, attentive, and friendly, a minority of guests have noted occasional inconsistencies in food temperature, seasoning, or portion sizes relative to the price. The atmosphere is widely appreciated for its modern, stylish decor and lively energy, although some diners find the music volume a bit too loud for intimate conversation. Overall, the restaurant remains a highly recommended spot in Quebec for those seeking a creative culinary adventure in a trendy, well-serviced environment.

Based on our recent lunch at Iru Izakaya in Sainte Foy, we encountered a dining experience defined by its contrasts. The service, provided by Priscilla, was functional & attentive, ensuring our orders were taken & meals delivered without issue. The atmosphere, hinted at by the'Carte Blanche' menu's promise of'l'art du partage à la japonaise' (the art of Japanese sharing), sets an appealing stage for a communal meal, though our visit landed in a comfortable, if not exceptional, middle ground.

The highlights of our meal were genuinely delightful & showcased the kitchen's strengths. The TAKOYAKI was a masterclass in this classic street food-perfectly spherical with a crisp exterior that gave way to a tender, flavourful centre. It was a textbook example of how this dish should be executed. We were also tempted by other items on the extensive menu, from the sharing platters of GYOZA to the intriguing-sounding SHIO TOMATO SARADA with its crispy noodles, which suggests a kitchen with creative potential.

However, this potential was not fully realized in every dish. The KINOKO MAZEMEN was a significant disappointment. While the description suggests a savory umami bomb from the mushrooms (kinoko), the reality was a bowl overwhelmed by a singular, cloying sweetness. The sauce was applied so heavily that it drowned the noodles & any other nuanced flavours, creating a monotonous & unbalanced dish that was difficult to finish. This misstep was particularly noticeable given the well-executed simplicity of other plates.

In conclusion, Iru Izakaya presents a menu full of promise, from its'Menu Découverte' to its various grilled skewers (Kushiyaki). Our experience, however, was a mixed bag. While you can undoubtedly find excellent dishes like the superb takoyaki, the inconsistency in the kitchen-exemplified by the poorly balanced Kinoko Mazemen-means your enjoyment may be a roll of the dice. It's a spot with a solid foundation & a compelling menu, but it needs more consistency to fully deliver on its concept of shared Japanese culinary artistry.
