About

Situated in the Port-Royal Hotel in the heart of the Old Port of Quebec City, Louise Taverne & Bar à Vin offers a unique experience. Our engaged and passionate team welcome guests in our warm and festive ambiance where we offer, at a reasonable price, a gourmet, flavourful and well sourced menu, exceptional and friendly service as well as one of the best selections of privately imported wines, cocktails and local beers from Quebec. Louise's interior design was conceived of by LemayMichaud, one of Canada's best architecture firms. Our terrace, with more than 100 seats, is bathed in sun during the summer months.

Our gourmet tavern and wine bar brings together two innovative restaurant concepts, which set Louise apart thanks to several factors. On the Taverne side, we were inspired by many of Europe’s gourmet taverns. Clients have the possibility to come and enjoy a comforting, flavourful meal in our warm and inviting environment. On the Bar à vin side, we offer a convivial ambiance to savor beers, wines and cocktails all while enjoying amuse-bouches, appetizers from our raw bar, a selection of salads, charcuteries, oysters, homemade pasta and risotto. Our guests can enjoy a unique experience in either or both the Taverne or Bar à vin sides when visiting us. It is possible at the Taverne and Bar à vin to simply enjoy a drink, appetizers or amuse-bouche or have a full meal.

Chef Nikolas Couture's Table

For those looking to reserve our chef's table in Louise Taverne's kitchen, we offer a unique experience for groups of 10 guests or less. Having worked in many of Quebec City's renowned restaurants such as Le Saint-Amour and Toast, Nikolas is very welcoming, friendly and rigorous in his culinary work. When eating at our butcher block-style table, Chef Nikolas offers guests a meal to share.

Menus, market fresh arrivals and our specialities

On the Taverne side we offer a wide variety of appetizers and main courses from our menu which changes according to the season. Our menu is inspired by the classics of well-known gourmet taverns around the world. You can taste our homemade charcuteries, tartares, bone marrow, whole fish, fish 'n chips, burgers, rabbit, braised beef cheek, lamb and vegetarian appetizers and mains. This menu is complemented every evening by our daily specials: oysters, appetizers, mains to share (fish, seafood, meat) foie gras and truffles. We also offer succulent appetizer and main options for vegetarians and vegans, as well as delicious options of children.

On the Bar à vin side, we propose many snacks, salads and raw appetizers from our menu. Our menu is inspired by some of the most popular wine bars around the world. Our guests can try our homemade hot dogs, tostadas, salads, tartares, ceviches, tataki, sashimi, carpaccio as well as vegetarian appetizers and mains. Review Summary

Louise Taverne & Bar à Vin is widely celebrated as a culinary gem in Old Quebec, known for its warm atmosphere, beautiful decor, and high-quality seasonal dishes. Guests frequently praise the exceptional service, noting that staff members are attentive, professional, and welcoming. While many highlight the chef's table experience, the inventive menu, and specialties like the fish and chips, tartares, and bison, some diners occasionally note that the space can become quite lively and noisy during peak hours. Overall, it is considered a must-visit destination for those seeking a memorable meal in a charming and upscale bistro setting.

The easiest way to say this is disappointed. We went there to eat lunch & not only does the menu offer very few items at quite high prices( 2 appetizers, 6 meals & 1 dessert option) but all out meals we're VERY similar a bit of basic salad , lots of fries & then the meal, no originality or creativity, for the price, they truly could've done better. I ate the salmon tartare & in sorry to say while the fish was fresh it was the most boring salmon tartare I ever ate, a creamy sauce, salmon & green onions, thats it, for 28$ its not much. Overall the restaurant is pretty clean & seemed organized but the food was disappointing & the waitress, even if the restaurant was close to empty, filled our water once the whole time we were there...

This was a fantastic restaurant all around!! The food, service, vibe were all professional, friendly, warm.
We had Chilean sea bass & flat iron steak, artichoke & hummus appetizer, affogato for dessert. All were very tasty. I had a nice French Sauvignon Blanc & my husband enjoyed some local beer. We sat at the bar which was very nice & were happy to watch the chef prepping the meals with the open kitchen concept.
Highly recommend!!

Fabulous dinner in a fun lively tavern!
The service was impeccable, attentive but never intrusive. Friendly while remaining professional.
We enjoyed the Poisson du Jour (catch of the day) which was grilled Arctic Char served on a bed of grilled vegetables, along with a squash puree.
The dessert menu was enticing & we opted for the Le Taco which is an herb cream filled crepe, topped with a lemon & raspberry sorbet.
Highly recommend this restaurant.

Phenomenal food, we had the salmon tartare & the catch of the day, swordfish with pureed carrots, roasted mushrooms & an almond butter sauce. Both were divine. Dinner was so good we had to have some dessert & we were not disappointed with the earl grey tiramisu. Also really appreciated the extensive non alcoholic beverage options as well as plentiful alcohol options.

Get the special! we got the pork & octopus, EVERYTHING was perfect! From the vegs- freshest greens, sweetest tomatoes, & that sauce & pork! But the star has to be the tender, juicy perfectly grilled octopus. For desserts we try the crème caramel with foie gras!! & yes, they really work well together, probably the best custard I've ever had. The taco crepe was also good but is pale in comparison.

We had a great time here - fantastic, friendly server that spoke a little French with us but was happy to step in with English when we needed it. The food was delightful - two of us had the cod special (pictured) which was unreal...a flavorful, thoughtful dish...while the third had a classic steak with potatoes which was also delicious. Great beverage offering, with a good assortment of wine, beer, cocktails, & non-alcoholic options. We were too full for dessert, but it was tempting! Recommend taking an Uber or taxi here from the Upper city, or take the Funiculaire down & walk a bit, just remember it closes at 9!

This is my first time in Quebec city as a tour director & I was lucky enough to discover Louise on my first night out. I knew immediately walking in there that I had made good choice, fantastic atmosphere, happy people; luckily for me one of the few spots left at the bar was free. Had the fish & chips which was good but next time I will be more adventurous & try out some of the other specialties. A great selection of alcoholic drinks of almost any description & some enticing desserts. I need to try out other locales on this trip but it will be a fight not to go back again :-)
