Review Summary

Buffet de L'Antiquaire is a beloved destination in Old Quebec, celebrated for its authentic and hearty Quebecois comfort food. Visitors frequently praise the generous portions and the delicious quality of classic staples like eggs Benedict, poutine, French onion soup, and homemade strawberry jam. Whether enjoyed on the charming terrace or in the cozy, retro-diner atmosphere of the upper floor, the experience is consistently described as a fantastic way to enjoy traditional local dishes. While the restaurant is exceptionally popular and often requires a wait during peak times, many diners find the welcoming service and reasonable prices to be well worth it, often returning multiple times during their stay.

The traditional house speciality four meat pie was nice enough. Somehow pies live in my head in some sort of ideal form that is difficult to find in life; I blame all that English literature whence they entered my imagination long before I could stick my fork into one. The accompanying vegetables had been boiled to the same state where my mother used to bring them, very boiled. Childhood trauma, eventually I will overcome & learn to love vegetables, but not these. The pickled beetroot was great. The pie was a bit sweet for my taste, as were all the other traditional sweets I tried in Canada. All in all not a bad meal, wanted to try traditional regional food & was delivered just that. Nice decor, good service.

Came by here on a Saturday evening - there's a line everywhere in the area. The wait for 8 diners was about 20 mins.

The manager was direct but friendly & accommodating. We ordered the items that had the Quebec logo next to it- the Cippaille (pastry+meat stack), smoked meat platter & the Assiettes des Québécois (pork pie with maple baked beans). Food came reasonably soon after orders & was quite well portioned.

Happy to have turned up here.

We went here for our final breakfast & it was overall pretty disappointing. The food was very mediocre. My husband's omelette literally had a piece of what looked like an unmelted Kraft American Single in it. Ewww. None of our food was very warm & it was just okay. We did enjoy the quaint atmosphere & the French toast was decent. We found it odd though that we were told not to join tables for our family of 5, & instead guided over to a corner table for 6, only to watch the wait staff join the exact same tables two minutes later for another party that had just shown up. Anyway, we certainly wouldn't go back, with all the other better breakfast options in Old Town Quebec.

After reading reviews, I decided for the best onion soup you may ever have: an abundant amount of goodness. The lunch menu has an upgrade option with soup & coffee. So, the meat pie was the king of this castle. The simple side of vegetables was elegant, had a family-kind of cooking, like if a grandma is making sure you eat delicious greens happily. The staff, did I just meet them? Such a friendly crew!! & their regulars were instant friends, & make sure you are a neighbor. I went for lunch, off peak hours on a lazy afternoon. I know it gets busy, so plan your visit.

The shepherd's pie & accompanying sides were pretty tasteless. Felt like I was eating hospital cafeteria food. Not a great sign when one is paying $28 all in.

I ordered an omelette with mushrooms. It came with potatoes & toast on the side. I also added a meat pie.

The flavors were quite plain & home-style, nothing refined or impressive.

We enjoyed the poutine, strawberry milkshake & sugar pie. Friendly service & the cafe has an air of warm history.

Had to wait outside, fortunately not for long. Hostess couldnt tell us how long the wait was when we got there. I have friends that have worked in the industry for decades & they always say a restaurant should be able to tell you how long the wait is. It's just good restaurant management. Got the pate chinois, which is a shepherds pie that used to be served to Chinese migrant railroad workers. Seems a bit racist to still call it that but moving on... It was cold. Tasted OK once it was reheated but there was a strong spice in it that I couldn't place that was a bit odd. Waitress seemed annoyed about giving me a take away box at the end of the meal.

We were really looking forward to trying some traditional Quebec fare & had a chilly but fun conversation with some locals while we waited outside for a table. The peasoup was very good but the classic meat pie & stew were disappointing by any standards, much less those of a highly rated local favorite. The food was overcooked & generally bland, not what you'd expect for a city known for culinary excellence.

First night in town. It looked quaint from the outside, warm & cosy on the inside & the owner is very friendly. We share a huge piece of 3 meats & vegi pie with salad. The food was delicious, the ambience was just what we were looking for. Really enjoyed.
