About

With their rigorous climate marked by a distinct seasonal cycle, northern territories are gifted with unique fauna and flora adapted to their extreme reality: game, fresh water fish, wild fruit, forest mushrooms, lichen… inspired by these unique elements, a rising number of chefs are exploring this once neglected exceptional culinary legacy.

In Quebec, Jean-Luc Boulay and Arnaud Marchand, supported by a passionate team, have been standing up to the challenge of inventing quebec inspired northern cuisine since 2012. Connecting the abundant proximity of boreal forests and the exceptional quality of local products, they salvage amidst french techniques to favour a true encounter of flavours. Local, healthy and inventive, the Northern cuisine from Quebec expresses within each bite the very best of our emerging culinary tradition.

Waitress was amazing. Overall did not think the food was very good. Beef cheeks was very tender but too salty to enjoy. Seal appetizer was very tasty but again too salty. Lobster entree was lacking in that there was minimal lobster! Nice ambience & service was quick & very helpful.

I made the reservation for 6 people on March 19th for July 16th & arrived to be seated in a very tight booth designed for only 4 people at the back of the restaurant beside the kitchen. We were uncomfortable, but the food was excellent & great value. The terrine of fois gras & onion soup were fantastic, & the chicken, cod, & shoulder of beef were delicious & you must order the potato purée! For dessert you must try the pot de chocolat & the crème prise. Highly recommended, but only bring your top two friends!

The food was excellent. We had the beef cheek & cod, & both were extremely well prepared. Great service as well. Overall a very good experience. We will certainly go back.

This was our second visit at this restaurant, the first time being 3 years ago. We were somewhat disappointed with the experience. The food was average at most & quite expensive overall. There are much better places to eat in Old Quebec for that same price & even less expensive.
Ambiance- the restaurant looks nice, the noise level is insane. We could barely hear each other talk which makes for not really a relaxing diner.
Food- Ok food but not enough to ever want to go back. They serve you bread & it is so hard you can barely chew it. We had onion soup, not done the traditional way which is ok to be creative but it really isnt very good. We had the beef cheek as the main meal, & it was just ok, overly salty & not that great. I had the crème brûlée for dessert & that really wasn't good. First, the top wasn't crunchy like it should be, it had a jam purée in it & the flavours just didn't work with the cream portion so that was 11$ badly spent.
Wine- They didn't have the wine we requested so that was a bit disappointing as well.
Service- the maître d' was not really nice & has major attitude. The waitress was very good & efficient.
Overall just not the experience I expect out of a 200$+ meal. This will be our last visit here

Excellent quality, professional service & unique menu make Bistro Boulay a must while in QC. The char carpaccio exceeded expectations with quality fish, enough acid to be interesting & well pickled veg to enhance. The beef cheek was delicious & reminiscent of long cooked beef short ribs. My wife's scallops were sweet & perfectly cooked. Our dessert of sea buckthorn pie was very tasty sort of like a mango/lemon combo. All in all great food that is unique but not strange.

I've eaten at many fine restaurants. The food here was exceptional. I had a terrine with seal in it that looked like a small Viennese layer cake. Such a delicate blend of subtle flavours. The beef cheek with mash & roasted carrots was delicious. Perfect Quebec winter food. The jus & pearl onions & smoked bacon formed the perfect accompaniment. Québec cheeses to finish. Magnifique!

Best dinner we had on our Quebec City trip! We were amazed by the atmosphere, the food & the service. I had the beef cheek & my partner had the halibut fish of the day - both were incredible. I can't recommend this restaurant enough - I will definitely be recommending all my family & friends visit this restaurant if they're in QC.

We had one of our best meals ever at Chez Boulay-bistro boreal. We all tried something different & loved, loved our food. The beef cheeks would not be a item I'd normally order, nor would be veal & oyster carpaccio. I was not disappointed. One member of our party had onion soup cappuccino style, it was fabulous. Our server, Maureen was amazing, friendly, helpful & fun to chat with. We highly recommend this restaurant.

Amazing space, fantastic & original food & impeccable service! Tried black blood pudding & seal meatloaf here for my first time... this dish was very delicious. My hubby had the shrimp & barley arancini as his appetizer. It was served with leek pesto, chard pesto in a vegetable broth. He said that this dish is better than how the Italians make arancini. He had the beef cheek for his main which is their signature dish... the cheeks are braised for 30 hours. We would definitely visit this establishment again. Highly recommend!
