About

Kundah Hôtel provides a focused exploration of Indian culinary traditions through a diverse menu highlighting regional spices and aromatic blends. The selection emphasizes a wide variety of vegetarian preparations that utilize fresh lentils, garden vegetables, and traditional dairy components to achieve complex flavor profiles. Expertly balanced masalas provide a foundational depth to signature curries, while clay oven techniques impart distinct textures to various plant-based offerings. Diners encounter a menu constructed around time-honored cooking methods that showcase the versatility of pulses, grains, and seasonal produce in authentic combinations. Fragrant basmati rice and house-made breads accompany these dishes to ensure a complete sensory experience centered on traditional preparation. Each plate reflects an objective commitment to maintaining the integrity of South Asian flavor structures through careful sourcing and methodical execution of classic recipes.

Review Summary

Kundah Hôtel offers a unique fusion dining experience that blends Indian-inspired flavors with local ingredients, frequently drawing praise for its creative tasting menu and excellent, professional service. While many guests celebrate the restaurant as a standout culinary destination in Quebec City with a vibrant atmosphere and exceptional cocktails, some visitors find the concept polarizing, noting that the fusion approach may not satisfy those seeking traditional Indian cuisine. Experiences can occasionally vary, with some patrons noting inconsistent portion sizes, long wait times, or seating preferences, yet the general consensus highlights a welcoming environment where the staff consistently works to accommodate dietary needs and provide a memorable, high-quality meal.

I had a great dinner with family. I found their tasting menu to be a deal for the quantity & quality, & it allowed us to enjoy most of their dishes. Their staff were very friendly & happy to accommodate dietary restrictions. Everyone had a lovely experience!

When you make a reservation online you can't choose where to be seated, however, it was not clear one option was to be seated at the bar. Not the most romantic setting for a date night. On top of that, the bartender, which was our default waiter apparently, didn't appear to have the best understanding of the menu, because when we were approached by a second person, the explanations & quality of service improved significantly. In the end, the food is fun & experimental in alignment with how they advertise themselves. But the fact that some customers can get an inferior experience than others paying the same felt wrong. You feel like a second class customer when seated at the bar while others dine in proper private dinning tables. Either offer a special price for the counter or leave those chairs for people with no reservations. Or at least inform people beforehand that the only thing available is the bar. Maybe some people like the bar better. Making it clear during the reservation process appears to be an easy solution.

Google lists this place as an Indian restaurant, & while the menu is Indian-inspired, it is clearly more of a fusion concept rather than authentic Indian cuisine. The waitress did inform us upfront that the food is fusion, which we appreciated.

We didn't have a reservation but were able to get a table for four without much difficulty. The place seems quite popular with locals & feels more like a pub-style restaurant with an Indian twist. The ambience is lovely, with plenty of plants & a warm atmosphere. The service was excellent - attentive & friendly throughout our visit. The only small suggestion would be to keep the music slightly more mellow to enhance the dining experience.

As for the food, we ordered chapathis, dhal, channa curry, & tandoori cauliflower. The chapathis were quite small & not properly baked. The dhal was sweeter than expected, while the channa curry was decent. The tandoori cauliflower was disappointing - it felt more steamed & al dente rather than properly tandoor-roasted, with minimal spices. It did have an interesting combination of blueberries with mint & jeera/ajwain, which was unique, but overall lacked depth of flavor.

The prices are on the higher side for what is offered. The portions are really very small for the price, which was disappointing. Street parking is available but can be difficult to find.
The service was very quick & the staff were friendly.
Overall, it's a good spot for those looking for a fusion-style, low-spice Indian experience in a pleasant pub-like setting, but definitely not ideal if you're expecting authentic Indian flavors & spicy food..
