Back in the day, when Savoyard shepherds wanted to warm up, they poured a little coffee and a lot of alcohol into a wooden shoe, hence the name “grolle”. Later, these shepherds made wooden containers that included several holes specifically designed for this recipe. There are now several sizes of grolles depending on the number of guests (from 2 holes to 8 holes). The grolle, also known as the “cup of friendship”, usually gets passed from hand to hand and should not come back on the table until it is finished.
La Grolla offers a delightful and authentic Swiss-style dining experience in the heart of Quebec City that consistently impresses guests with its cozy, rustic atmosphere. The menu features a variety of fondue options, including cheese, broth, and chocolate, which many visitors find delicious, generous, and perfect for sharing with family and friends. While individual experiences can vary, the overall sentiment highlights a warm and welcoming environment where the staff are frequently praised for their attentiveness, professionalism, and helpful recommendations. Whether enjoying a romantic evening or a celebratory meal, diners often find themselves transported by the charming decor and high-quality food, making it a memorable destination worth visiting.
One of the reasons why you need to visit Quebec City except from the Chateau, the falls & the plethora of activities, is to have dinner at La Grolla!!! The best spot of the city has :Incredible food, amazing wine & great decoration with a unique attention to detail. Must try the classic fondue & the cheese fondue with some white or red wine, depending on your preferences. Big, big thanks to Olivier & La Grolla for offering us the best food & hospitality experience that we had, not only during our 3day visit in Quebec but in 5 years we have been to Canada. Will be back asap!!!
Probably the best meal we've had in Quebec City. We got the Quebec cheese fondue for 4 with bread, veggies, charcuterie, & potatoes & a bottle of wine. Very unique decor & our waiter Oliver was fantastic. Highly recommend!!
Cute restaurant with delicious food. Good service as well. The chinese fondue was just meat & broth though, I was honestly expecting it to come with vegetables..One thing that confused me were the portions, since we were ordering from the table dhote menu where you got a cheese fondue, meat & chocolate for dessert. We were 3 couples who each got this, but the dishes were combined- instead of per couple it was a serving for the group. I know I was out with friends but wasn't looking to be sharing between everyone. At the end the chocolate fondue was just a little 2 oz bowl for 6 ppl & it was mostly marshmallows, no fruit or cake to dip

The food is good, the place is warm, & it has a great atmosphere. However, the dishes & lighting aren't suitable for taking great pictures. The map on the table looks old & isn't clean enough for my food. The onion soup took several minutes to arrive, & unfortunately, I wasn't satisfied with it. On the bright side, the fondue, both cheese & meat options, was excellent & highly recommended. Despite ordering a lot of food for two people, the total cost was just $85, which was a great deal. On the downside, the fruit in the dessert didn't look freshly cut.
Such a great experience we went back 2 nights later for more. Highly recommend the Swiss fondue (top 3 we have ever had) & pair with the Alsatian Riesling , servers were very friendly. It’s a small place that gets busy so don’t be in a rush & enjoy the cheese. Recommend making a reservation.
It was a lovely spot with great service but we partly booked it because there was a fireplace, which turned out to be a lit log in an old fireplace & the Bacchus fondue was way too salty but the cheese fondue was good.
Un incontournable quand on vient a Québec City. En temps que français vivant dans la partie anglophone, c'est plus qu'un plaisir & c'est excellent !
If you never had a cheese fondue or Raclette or meat fondue "bourguignonne" you have to go & try. Your taste buds will thank you!
We were looking for an eating adventure while visiting Quebec. After going to a Quebecois & a French restaurant, we thought we'd go further in our explorations. This was a great choice!
Just outside the walled city is this casual cozy restaurant. Our server, Oliver, spoke impeccable English & was attentive & patient with our questions. There were a lot of options on the menu!
We ordered both beef & cheese fondues & enjoyed both. When we ran out of bread before cheese, Oliver refilled the bread. As the cheese got low, he turned down the heat on our pot to ensure it didn't burn, & then scraped off & tempered the cheese that was starting to harden in the bottom. We ate every bite!
This was a fun fun evening with good food & service!
Fantastic food, very casual, family friendly & fair prices. Servers are very friendly & we recommend the mushroom & cognac fondue! (Get the vegetable plate alongside for a fresh addition & some gherkins if you enjoy pickles with your cheese).
