What reviews say

L'Affaire est Ketchup is widely celebrated as a unique culinary gem in Quebec City, offering an unforgettable and intimate dining experience that makes guests feel like they are sharing a meal at a friend's home. The restaurant is renowned for its exceptional, thoughtfully prepared cuisine, with standout dishes like the sweetbreads, duck, and various seasonal offerings earning consistent praise for their technical depth and remarkable flavor. The atmosphere is frequently described as warm, lively, and unpretentious, complemented by a friendly and highly knowledgeable team who guide patrons through a daily revolving menu presented in both French and English. While the small, cozy space and communal dining concept require advance reservations and a bit of patience, most visitors find the high-quality food, superb wine pairings, and vibrant, authentic energy to be well worth the wait and an absolute highlight of their travels.

came via Bourdain; restaurant name is Quebec French slang meaning roughly'it's all good'/'we're in business'. food was delicious in a light & natural sense, menu changes based on seasonal availability & maybe that's why options are based around meats but actually the pairing veggies are tasty as well. recommend sweetbread & pork.

Was disappointed overall to be honest. I had high expectations based on reviews & recommendations. The service was strained & inattentive unfortunately, the concept was interesting & agreeable. Started with the veal sweetbreads, excuted perfectly however the main was average at best. The cod was barley warmed threw & was dry with a pronounced reheated texture & taste. I understand the limitations of the kitchen & equipment but my table mates confit lamb shank was tough & gamey. It was definitely not confited long enough to breakdown the connective tissues as well not kept in the fat to ensure tendernes. Lots of potential but missed the mark on serveral points

A special place, the perfect experience. Don't leave without ordering the sweetbread…& get the dessert.

Some of the best dishes in Quebec, in a carefree relaxed environment. A shared experience at the start as the menu is explained. Each dish has remarkable flavour, & technical depth.

Like hanging out at your friends apartment, if your friend was a Michelin chef.

I don't get the hype.

We went there with high expectations based on all the reviews. We were seated at 8:30pm, the second seating for the evening with all other guests of this seating welcome into the restaurant around the same time. We were immediately instructed to make drink orders. However every table was handed out a drink menu but us, & we had to request for the drink menu. After we ordered some wine, it was a long wait till around 9:25pm when the actual food menu was announced to every guest.

& after we ordered the food, the first bite, which was bread & butter, was finally served at about 10pm, a total of 90 min after we were seated. We were already starving.

Then the appetizers finally started rolling out. The sweetbread was fantastic. Octopus & asparagus, however, were somewhat lackluster.

Then the main courses came. We had halibut, duck beast & wild boar loin. Flavors were all good, but nothing that really impressed me. Halibut & duck breast were cooked very well, but the wild boar was somewhat on the dry side. Oh I really liked the turnip that went with the halibut.

After we finished the main courses it was already 11pm. We had to leave as it was getting too late, & we had to skip the desserts, which had not been announced yet at that point.

So 2 hours & a half for a two course dinner. I think the slow pacing is too much. & the food, albeit good, doesn't justify the time for me. Honestly I can cook a two course dinner of a similar quality within 2 hours & a half at home. I went there with the expectation of having something special from a home style restaurant, & in the end what I got was some good home style cooking, but nothing special, plus a lot of wait at the table

Btw it was quite hot inside the restaurant on a warm summer night

Bourdain chasing on our Quebec trip. Was mildly disappointed by Joe Beef in Montreal, so going into Ketchup I had high hopes that it would deliver & save our trip. & oh my did the team at Ketchup deliver. Walking in it's a very unpretentious spot, very quickly it's obvious the focus is 100% on the food. The menu was explained to the whole restaurant, & you can tell while the waiter was explaining the food they were very proud of it. We had the octopus, sweetbread, boar, halibut, duck, & Queen Elizabeth cake.

I was blown away by the sweetbread. The highlight of the night for me. The other dishes did not disappoint as well. The octopus & boar had very interesting Asian-influenced flavors (lemongrass, star anise etc). The duck personally was slightly under, but that's personal preference.

The Queen Elizabeth cake was a pleasant surprise, first time having it & it's basically just a big piece of sticky nougat (that's a good thing). I would have to disagree with their weapon of choice however, as it was very hard to use a spoon on such a hard dessert.

Anyways, Ketchup is going to be a must visit for me whenever I'm in Quebec. Very reasonable prices as well ($100~ for 3 courses & drink).

Also, bread service was amazing. Soft baguette & really good butter.

Small, fun, unpretentious, seriously good food. What I love most about l'Affaire Ketchup is that it's an authentic, absolutely Canadian gem away from the touristy old town. The kitchen delivers amazing dishes from two old household stoves. Which is in & of itself noteworthy. The quality of dishes & the no-frills service makes it amazing. We tried a fresh tomato plate, sweetbreads (a must), asparagus, roasted duck (a little gamey, as is sometimes the case with wild duck), & a veal shoulder served with a gravy that could cause addiction. Missing were the scallops. Halibut was in its place. Bourdain loved it. I do, too.

The entire experience was the height of gastronomic excellence, but served in a warm, friendly & relaxed environment. The menu changes daily but we were blown away by the tomato & burrata, the fresh asparagus, the sweetbreads & the beef shoulder. Definitely the best meal I've had in Quebec. We had the bar table & marvelled that the chef prepared everything on two small electric ovens. Would recommend to anyone wanting a high end culinary treat!

First, let me say I have been here 3 times in the past 15 years. Once 15 years ago, once in 2017, & once now. It used to be one of my favorite restaurants in North America. What's changed?

First, maybe food culture. There are tons of great French restaurants & farm to table restaurants everywhere now, so the bar is higher. Second, the ordering process. It feels a bit like a cruise ship. The waiter comes out & tells the entire restaurant the menu. Most of the clientele probably came to the place through blogs & TV shows (no judgement, just that's the vibe) & then they take your order. Ok… but everything came out a little cold & average. Everything was under-salted & under-seasoned. The ingredients were solid, cook was good, but again, everything tasted like it had been sitting. The sweetbreads were still a highlight. Wine was good. Staff was cool.

The overall feeling was that this place had its day 10-15 years ago & they're resting on their laurels & once great reputation. This review is coming out of love. I wanted the place I knew, but was let down. I don't need yesteryear, but the bar either needs to remain strong or raise up, & I think in this case, the bar dropped a couple notches.

What happened?

A lovely dining experience in this quaint & cozy restaurant. It appears the menu changes on a daily basis based on the fresh ingredients available. The server orates the menu options to the patrons. I had an amazing steak entre & a lamb sweetbread appetizer. The food was delicious & they had a very nice wine selection. It was a unique & special dining experience. I highly recommend.
