Bistro St-Malo is widely celebrated for its authentic French culinary experience in the heart of Quebec City. Guests consistently praise the high-quality menu, frequently highlighting the French onion soup, beef cheek, seafood stew, and duck confit as standout dishes. The atmosphere is described as cozy, intimate, and warm, featuring a delightful bistro aesthetic accompanied by classic French music. Many reviewers emphasize that the exceptional service and friendly, attentive staff contribute significantly to making each visit memorable. While the restaurant is popular and often busy, making advance reservations is highly recommended to secure a spot in this charming, well-regarded establishment.
The best dinner we have had in many years! The food & staff are wonderful. It was a great night out. The mussels & duck were perfection & the Creme brûlée was a wonderful end to a perfect meal.
We had an excellent evening at the Bistro. The service was friendly & prompt while the Covid set-up reassuring. The food was delicious though the only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the escargot covered with cheese. Being a lover of escargots, this took away from the taste & there was hardly any garlic butter. On the other hand the mussels (marinière), the shared smoked seafood platter & the paella were excellent. The street is under construction but it was quiet when we went.
Cozy atmosphere & very good food — mussels, french onion soup, tartiflette, wine, & profiteroles. If you are looking for a memorable evening at a classic Quebec bistro, this is the place.
This little place is unassuming, but was a very good experience. The atmosphere was very casual but the food was rich & delicious. We started with the parmesan Dijon mussels which is not normally a sauce we would choose for mussels, but we took a chance & were not disappointed. Next, the pork osso bucco was very tasty & although not beef, the dish was rich with flavor & the meat fell off the bone. The duck confit was just as delicious & melted in your mouth. We also had the beef tartare. It was good, but probably would not order this again off of this menu because other menu items were better. Although the place was very busy the service was good as well.
We were in town for 4 days & this was our favorite meal. We will return when in Quebec City again. Thank you for a lovely meal!
On recommendation from a friend searched out this little gem in Quebec City. Couldn't make unlimited mussels night but even the small size mussels were plentiful! Our server was really great the small cozy decor reminded me of the underground cave at the museum. Normally where we come from in Vancouver the French onion soups tend to be very salty but this one has superb cheese pull & not salty at all. I ordered the rabbit entree with risotto & ratatouille. Magnafique!!! Would definitely recommend!
We were to be in Quebec City just two nights & had done our research & decided we wanted authentic French cuisine & picked St-Malo after reading the great reviews. As the only available table inside was right at the back near the kitchen & bar., we took a little table in front where we enjoyed watching the world go by.
The staff bent over backwards to make us happy. I'm a scotch drinker & the chef offered me a shot of his very own personal 12 year old single malt scotch whisky. It was delicious. This was a great start to an excellent dinner. My wife loves onion soup & was not disappointed, calling it the best she'd had (& I make a pretty fine onion soup!). She followed that with Mussels Marina, which she said were perfect. I had the octopus salad to start which was delicious. Their on-line menu offers a Cassoulet which I was looking forward to as I can't find a good one in Toronto, but I learned that this was only offered in the winter (I wish they would update their on-line menu to current offerings). The server suggested the beed cheek & I enjoyed. Many of the wines on their wine list are not currently available since covid but the server brought us a couple of other tasters to try that were not on the wine list & we settled on a delicious California Cabernet Sauvignon.
My wife & I have eaten in many fine dining restaurants over the decades but now we prefer friendly little bistros with good authentic food & this is what you get at Bistro St-Malo. Excellent food & service that won't break your wallet.
Mussels were outstanding! My wife & I shared the SMALL portion as an appetizer. There must have been 2 dozen mussels. Three broths are offered - we picked the juniper berry.
The salmon & gnocchi was superb as was the duck leg. 5 stars all around including the great service.
I'm giving this restaurant five stars because the food was really, really good. The catch of the day (salmon) came with a gnocchi that we wished we could order a whole plate of; the seafood pasta was delicious & came with a ton of scallops & mussels; & the braised pork was also a great dish. The homemade ice cream with apple pie is something I'd like to order again. Overall, I'm definitely recommending my friends to make a reservation here if ever in Quebec City. The only down-sides were that there was no bread served at this restaurant at dinner (steamed mussels came with french fries), & the service was a little slow (it looked like there were only two servers working the place on a Friday night).
