Was looking for a local craft experience for my first time in Rimouski. We picked La Baraque because they had an awesome looking menu. We love the fact that the street was closed down for a pedestrian walkway & we could hear music playing. The vibe was good. When we got there, we were asked if we were there to eat or drink & we said both & were also immediately informed it was an hour wait for burgers. We were told other things would come out faster- no problem- I wasn't committed to the burgers.
We were seated at about 8:40. It took until 8:54 before we were even acknowledged at the table. We asked to see the menu for beers & were told to scan the QR. When I mentioned that it was too faded to scan we were told we could go up & look at the menu by the bar. No problem. We took a picture & when we realized 4 were from Pit Caribou, we ordered 3 flights with the remaining 12 options as we'd been to Pit Caribou yesterday (outstanding experience btw). It was 9:16 by the time our drinks arrived. The place was busy but not all the tables were full. We asked at the time of ordering (9:07pm) if it was still an hour for burgers. We were told 40 minutes but that others things would come out much faster. We opted tor the Mac fries & after asking if the fish was fresh & being told yes, a fish & chips. The food came out at 9:44pm. 3 minutes faster than ordering a burger.
The Mac fries were dead ass cold. The bottom of the basket had a bit of mild warmth, but it had sat for a long time. The fish in the fish & chips were dark, as were the fries. Like when the oil hasn't been filtered or refreshed nearly often enough.
At this point I was done. I sent my fries back & asked if the manager was in & was told the one of the owners was in. He refused to come out to speak to us. But we did see him come out of the kitchen & head to the patio purposely avoiding us. The server gave the excuse he doesn't speak English well. My travelling companion is francophone even though you can't tell when she speaks English.
I have travelled over 200 craft breweries between Ontario, Quebec, PEI, Newfoundland, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina & Florida. I live in the Niagara region. I know busy & I know tourism. This was an overall extremely poor experience capped off by an owner who refused to speak with us & will, undoubtedly based on other reviews, make excuses. The server tried. He apologized, he comped one flight & my fries.
So, in a 10 day journey that included brewery visits in Magog, Coaticook, Sherbrooke, Windsor, & the Lévis areas, we are left on the lowest of possible lows.
There is opportunity here, do better.
Belle ambiance amicale.
