Bistro Hortus was a meal I had been looking forward to, especially given its farm-to-table concept & tasting menu. The staff is friendly & attentive. The place is cozy & pleasant.
The presentation throughout the meal was beautiful, each course was thoughtfully plated & visually appealing. However, several times the flavors simply didn't match the aesthetics.
The venison appetizer looked stunning but lacked depth & flavor. The main course followed a similar pattern: attractive presentation, but the sauce fell flat. That said, the duck & vegetables themselves were well-prepared & properly cooked. Dessert was the biggest disappointment. It came across as underwhelming & somewhat incomplete, partially poached, hard to cut, lacking flavor, & paired with bland crumbs that didn't add much to the dish.
I should note that I wasn't alone in this experience, others at my table who ordered the same tasting menu (priced at $75 CAD) shared similar feedback. In hindsight, the next time, I will order from the regular menu instead. Recommended, with some caveats.

When I arrived at Bistro Hortus on my birthday for my reservation for three people, I decided I wanted to eat alone because my family was driving me insane. Marianne, who was also my server, was happy to allow me to eat alone. She sat my family separate from me. I am so glad that I at alone.
The staff was wonderful & very sympathetic to me being very sad on my birthday. My mood changed when I sat down. The music playing was great & the atmosphere was classy, but it gave me a casual homey feeling.
After ordering the Quebec Lamb Shank, I settled into a super yummy meal. I found myself rocking my head back & forth to the music & enjoying the delicious food. At one point, I actually closed my eyes without knowing it because I was so relaxed & the food was so good. The cider I ordered was also refreshing & light.
For dessert, I ordered Pouding Chomeur. Because they knew it was my birthday, my dessert came with it a super cool zig zag candle that came out of the board It was served on. I felt really special in a place I had never been before. It was simply divine. If you do not like very sweet desserts, this one might not be for you. Although the caramel sauce is very sweet, the maple ice cream that is served with balances it out. ORDER IT & see!
Overall this is a great place to eat, or just to get some tea, coffee or a glass of wine. If you are living a gluten-free lifestyle, you will love this restaurant. Instead of searching all over the menu for something that you can eat, the entire menu is open to you. I will come back again before my trip is over.
A very unique & special dinner in Quebec City. The Bistro Hortus prides itself on locally sourced ingredients & a menu that is exclusively crafted around both Gluten Free & Nut Free .
We had made reservations weeks in advance as I had heard it gets very busy & reservations are highly recommended.
Upon arrival we were greeted & immediately shown to our table . Our waitress explained the philosophy of the restaurant & took our ordered . Cocktails included locally sourced ingredients & local artisanal gin. Both delicious .
Appetizer we got a fresh goat cheese platter with GF crackers & grilled zucchini. Honey drizzled over goat cheese is their own harvest. Great combination of flavors .
Main dishes we got a vegetarian dish with Beluga lentils , smoked tofu & roasted squash. Truly special dish packed with flavor & good healthy fiber . Also as a main the organically raised chicken was juicy & well seasoned . Accompanied by an array of vegetables including beets , carrots & sweet potatoes with a homemade BBQ sauce that had hints of honey . Definitely a memorable plate .
The entire dessert menu is also Gluten Free which is often a rarity at restaurants. We tried the pudding Chomeur which is a moist cake soaked in a hot caramel sauce that soaks up into the cake . On top of that was an organic maple syrup ice cream that tied everything together . Warm cake & ice cream : a dream of flavors .
The staff was great . Fast & accommodating by explaining the menu & making recommendations.
You can tell the owners take pride in this farm to table plus locally sourced ingredients restaurant .
Our experience at the Bistro Hortus was so good, we went twice in one day. Having a completely gluten free menu made dining a breeze for myself (a celiac). The service (Available in French & English) was outstanding as was the food. I would highly recommend the restaurant to anyone with celiac disease or a gluten intolerance. I would definitely go again!
We didn't have dinner reservations for one of the nights during our stay in Quebec City, so we decided to give Bistro Hortus a try. It was late September, & although we were hesitant to sit outside, their charming patio with heaters won us over. The cozy atmosphere & lively view of the street made it the perfect spot to enjoy the evening.
We ordered the burger, the vegetarian pasta, & a salad-all of which were absolutely delicious. The highlight, however, was the spicy margaritas crafted by Anne. They were so good that we each ended up having three by the end of the night!
& the service? Outstanding. Simon was friendly, attentive, & funny-he truly elevated the whole experience.
We will definitely return every time we visit Quebec City. Highly recommended for anyone looking for excellent food, fantastic drinks, & wonderful service.

Had dinner at Bistro Ortus & really enjoyed it. The food was fresh & flavorful, & the vibe was relaxed but nice. Service was friendly & quick. Would definitely go back next time I'm in town.
On our last day in Quebec City, my fiancée & I had a lovely brunch at Bistro Hortus. It's a really cute spot, & we enjoyed eating out on their patio.
The brunch deal was great - it came with fruit, a yogurt bowl, & coffee or tea, all included with your main dish. Everything was very good, & it was just a great little spot to wrap up our trip in QC. Definitely a nice find!

We have been dining at Bistro Hortus for a few years now during our visits to Old Quebec City. It has become one of our favourite restaurants. With one of us being celiac, we always know we can safely dine & recieve not only excellent food, but excellent service.
Ingredients are always fresh, the wine selections are more than adequate & the variety of gluten free options is hard to beat.
Every dish has been delicious, especially the nachos which are unlike any nachos we have ever had. It's one of our go-to dishes when we visit.
You cannot go wrong with a dining experience at Bistro Hortus.

Bistro Hortus was awesome. All the little touches & things they added to the restaurant really make it special. Our favorite were the dividers in between tables on the back wall. We also loved all the accoutrement that came with this delicious breakfast.
What an amazing lunch at Bistro Hortus! Everything was great -the setting, the food, & the exceptional service. Our waitress Eve was great in suggesting our meal , I will be back !
Like most bistros the things to order are not many. But what Bistro Hortus offers does delight. Took a chance on Boxing Day & we were handsomely rewarded. My two teens had the breakfast poutine with duck eggs. Tasted more like an elegant stew. My wife got the salmon with lobster bisque. "Mmmmm's" were heard throughout. I had the duck egg omelet with Quebec mushrooms & a refreshing salad. Hit the spot. My oldest treated themselves to a hot chocolate that featured ganache, maple foam, & homemade marshmallows. If in Old Quebec, definitely worth your time.
