Review Summary

La Buche offers a vibrant and authentic dining experience that captures the heart of traditional Quebecois cuisine. Guests frequently praise the warm, festive atmosphere and the eclectic decor, which includes a notably unique washroom design. While the menu features hearty, comfort-focused dishes such as poutine, tourtière, and various maple-inspired desserts, the attentive and friendly staff consistently enhance the visit. Although the popularity of the restaurant can lead to bustling crowds and the need for reservations, many visitors find the overall quality of the food and the lively cultural immersion well worth the experience.

We had a wonderful experience at this restaurant in Quebec City. It was our first time in the city, & we wanted to start our trip with a great meal. We arrived around lunch time, & the restaurant was quite busy as expected. We were seated in the last room on the left, & it took a while for our server to show up. He served us water (not cold) & dropped off the menus.

We explained that we were first-time visitors & didn't speak French, but our server didn't seem to mind. He was more focused on setting up tables than on our needs. I had to remind him of our drink orders, & although I finished my drink, he never offered a refill.

We ordered the Sugar Shack Plate - The Big One, which was a delicious all-in-one plate that gave us a taste of Canada. It was served by Julius, who was very friendly & welcoming.

Overall, we had a great time at the restaurant, but we wish our server had been more attentive to our needs.

I had apple French toast, & they were perfect! We tried a few other places, but this was by far the best dessert I had in Quebec City. Despite there being available tables, it took time for us to be seated.

Lovely atmosphere & decor. I ordered the french toast with apples. I guess it's called a sugar shack for a reason. This dish certainly came with a side of diabetes. The french toast was lukewarm at best, & it came out very quickly, so I am wondering whether it was pre-prepared. Whilst the caramel sauce was delicious, my french toast was just drowning in sauce & too sickly sweet by the end for my liking.

This was our first time to eat at La Buche. Our friends that live near Quebec City recommended this restaurant when we asked them where we could eat traditional French Canadian cuisine….right away they said…'La Buche'.

The food was great. The drinks were very good. The dessert was delicious. The service was friendly. Overall we had a great dining experience.

I couldn't write a review glowing enough to adequately hype up how incredible La Buche is. I found it by searching around for family friendly restaurants & it's a 3 minute walk from Cheatau Frontec, where we were staying. We went on a Saturday evening & it was fairly busy but we had a nice window table right away. The host was one of the nicest people I've ever encountered in the restaurant industry. They didn't have any high chairs for our 9 month old, so he sent someone to a nearby establishment to pick one up for us. He was continually coming to chat with our daughters, & even spent a minute to sit & interact with the baby. He is a true gem andI hope La Buche knows how lucky they are to have him!

Our server was equally excellent. I practice French as much as possible & he was patient, answered the couple of pronunciation questions I had, & was just generally wonderful.

My husband & I split a fois gras & it was excellent. I had a pork dish with puréed carrot & it was the perfect portion size. Everything was super well prepared. I forget what my husband had, the poutine perhaps? Whatever it was, he enjoyed it. & oh my goodness, the rolls are delicious. Definitely do not skip them. My daughter struggled a bit as she got the croquettes & they were very meat heavy. & she's been on a French fry strike lately, so she ate other things off our plates & it worked out.

Also definitely take a trip to the bathroom. One of the coolest restrooms I've ever seen.

Restaurant La Bûche was the perfect spot for our first night in Quebec. It was crowded & buzzing in the best way, with a lively, welcoming energy. The décor is campy but charming & adds to the fun, casual vibe. Our waitress was incredibly friendly & helped make the experience even better.

Food highlights were the poutine with meat topping-truly excellent & addictive-the French onion soup, deer tartare, & the make?your?own maple taffy for dessert, which was a fun & memorable finish. The only miss was the meat pie, which I really wanted to love but found a bit too dry & could have used more broth or gravy.

Overall, a lively, comforting, & very Quebecois meal that we thoroughly enjoyed.

We visited La Buche at 8:00 PM on a packed Thursday night, & I'm so glad we booked online in advance, we were seated almost immediately despite the crowd. The energy in the room was high & vibrant, the decor had so many interesting details, making for a truly memorable atmosphere.

We were pleasantly surprised when it was the co-proprietor (Mychael?) personally led us to a beautifully appointed table by the window. Our server was incredibly accommodating & welcoming, which really helped since this was our first time diving into authentic Quebecois cuisine.

The food was a gastronomic & cultural revelation. We shared several dishes, & every single one hit the mark:

* The Classics: The La Tourtière Facon Buche (duck, pork, beef meat pie) & Onion Soup were hearty & traditional.

* The Starters: The Tartare de Cerf (deer tartare) & Croquettes de Pate (meat pie nuggets) offered a great introduction to local flavors.

* The Mains: Both the Salmon Dylan Cabane & the Roti de Cochon (pork - so tender) were expertly prepared.

While the pricing is on the higher side, the quality of the ingredients & the level of service make it a worthwhile splurge. It's a fantastic spot if you want a lively, upscale take on French-Canadian comfort food.

We haven't tried the other choices & we missed dessert so we definitely have a reason to come back!

Went today for lunch & ordered french onion soup & the steak & eggs. The French onion soup was in the deconstructed style but it didn't feel like French onion soup - soup in a bowl & bread with cheese on the side. No Gruyère or bread in the soup itself, & most disappointingly the soup was lukewarm. It was not prepared with bread & cheese on top & cooked under broiler, it was simply poured into a cold bowl & served with barely warm bread with cheese no longer melted. Quite disappointing. The bread was nice but the flavour of soup was not well balanced & fell a bit flat, tasted too strongly of red wine. My girlfriend got the steak & eggs which was fine but a small portion on only one slice of bread & the steak seemed to be quite a cheap cut of meat & not very much of it. Also the atmosphere was only okay, the music choice was pretty bad. Floor was also very dirty with food scraps under the table & my butt had food crumbs on it when I stood up. The positives - our waiter was lovely, very friendly & listened to our less than perfect French.
