Review Summary

La Buche offers a vibrant and authentic dining experience that captures the heart of traditional Quebecois cuisine. Guests frequently praise the warm, festive atmosphere and the eclectic decor, which includes a notably unique washroom design. While the menu features hearty, comfort-focused dishes such as poutine, tourtière, and various maple-inspired desserts, the attentive and friendly staff consistently enhance the visit. Although the popularity of the restaurant can lead to bustling crowds and the need for reservations, many visitors find the overall quality of the food and the lively cultural immersion well worth the experience.

What a charming place! Very friendly staff & food was great. Fun to try new dishes! Started with pea soup, rabbit wings & deer tartare. All were good, but for me the deer was a bit too raw for me, but I tried it! My husband & I split the shepherds pie & was perfect comfort food. My favorite was the poor man's pudding for dessert! Definitely a must if in the area!

The best meal we had in Quebec City! Pate chinois was the best & I'll be dreaming about the maple pie.

The food, ribs & shepherd's pie, was delicious & perfectly cooked. The service, by Arnot, was outstanding. An excellent choice for dining.

So much fun...a lot of tourist kitsch, but the food was so well done & the service so good that the touristy vibe was just fun.

Try the pate chinois for a "shepherds pie" that is a step up from your mom's kitchen. & the pouding chomeur.....oh my. It's huge & absolutley delicious. Pea soup....so traditional yet uniquely prepared. It was delicious!

My son at I ate at La Buche on a sat evening. The restaurant is very relaxed & the food was wonderful. I had the shepherds pie & my son chose the Poutine. Both were great. I will say though, the best part was the pork scratchings as the apps. Yummy.

Excellent service! I had the hunt of the day, which was Bison, & it was cooked to perfection. My companion had the shepherds pie & the braised beef was out of this world. First time having the poor man's pudding & will definitely be coming back just for that! Made the entire trip, & will continue to recommend to all my friends & family visiting QC :)

Lovely old building with an authentic northern Canadian feeling. Luckily we had made reservations, as the line up to get in was very long. Great French Canadian music. The food was tasty & a wide variety of meats & dishes were available. We had the chef's special (venison shank with fettuccine & scallops) & the Shepherd's pie. Both were delicious. For dessert we tried the poor man's cake with ice cream. This was not to our liking, but many people recommended it so it was just a personal choice. I would definitely recommend you try this place as it us an unique experience.

I have never in my life left a bad review. But this place was so terrible we have to warn others. We were so excited to get reservations here. We read all the glowing reviews & we couldn't wait to have dinner. We arrived to a line out the door. Despite our reservation we were waiting for a while. The restaurant was very loud & very crowded. At this point my spidey-sense began tingling. I should have trusted my gut (which is now bubbling dubiously after eating here). After waiting about 20 minutes for our table, we were shuffled through crowds & jammed in like sardines in a small table right next to a speaker that assaulted us with rock Christmas music playing so loud we couldn't hear ourselves think. We also couldn't see. The room was so dark it was impossible to read the menu. Like four blind mice we pulled out our phones & turned on the flashlight to be able to decide what we wanted to eat. While we reviewed the menu (which was in itself a very confusing endeavor) we proceeded to wait another 15 minutes for them to come & take our drink order. By the time they finally got around to taking our drink order we had made decisions on what to eat. We ordered the pea soup, the foie gras, the chicken sandwich, the rabbit wings & the Shepard's pie. After about 20 more minutes our soup came. The drinks had still not come. At this point the assaultive music had us just wanting to leave, but we decided to stick it out, hoping for the best. Then our drinks came. I had to pull out the flashlight again to understand them. I don't know about you, but I have never had a whiskey & ginger ale served with a slab of bacon on top. The 5 oz wine pour was 3oz at best & I wanted to light myself on fire as the first sip tasted more like salad dressing than wine. I didn't realize you could mess up pea soup, but they did. It was meaty & weird & had a horrible rotten herb flavor. We sent it back. We still got charged for it though. I ordered another drink just to rinse the gross flavor out of my mouth, but it never came. The foie gras was good & the pie was OK. The chicken sandwich was OK too. But nothing spectacular. The waitstaff was truly doing their best, but it was just a horribly run situation & I was just so confused for the entire evening & couldn't get out of there fast enough. Sadly, when we did ask for the check, that took another 20 minutes & her machine was broken, so I had to weave my way back through crowds to pay the bill in some back room. No accommodations were made for the food we sent back or the drinks they got wrong. Lovely staff, mediocre food (at best) & dungeon torture atmosphere. If I could leave zero stars I would.

The food was excellent & our waiter, Christopher, was terrific as well. We ordered the ribs, salmon & the shepherd's pie. All of it was delicious. When we return to Quebec, it will be our first stop.
