About

The great story of a small bistro... Like a treasure buried in the heart of Faubourg St-Jean, a really well-kept secret ... the story of The Hobbit. This small, unpretentious bistro, is a reflection of the character of Tolkien, it carries with it the greatness of a story whose echo is still heard today at the cafe. Over time, it became the place where culinary delights come together in an ambiance worthy of a warm and cozy home. But beware, behind that familiar face, between the stones of this old house lurk ghosts that give The Hobbit that "je ne sais quoi" and make it a place apart from all others.

The food was fantastic! We ordered:
- Roasted halibut with steak spices & chamomile, carrot, peach & yarrow cream, confit carrots, carrot & sorel salad, kimchi powder
- Charcoal grilled Turlo pork loin, cauliflower & cream cheese butter, gooseberry veggie stock, shiitake ketchup, roasted hazelnuts, pain perdu croutons

Both were amazing, & they complimented each other so well.

Our server, Sebastian, was also super lovely & we could see that he was working so hard to serve us as well as all the tables around us & on the patio. We felt really bad because we could see that the restaurant was understaffed with servers, as they were constantly attending to all the guests/tables but we still had a very long wait. We wanted to order the donut for dessert, but ended up waiting over half an hour after we finished our main courses & ended up asking for the bill & leaving since we didn't want to extend our stay even longer. Again, it was not at all on Sebastian but rather management, as we could see that they would have benefitted from just one more server on the floor.

Food, service, ambiance were all fantastic. Management could do better with scheduling for a 5* dining experience. I would expect that from a Michelin guide restaurant too.

Came for dinner & got the foie gras toast, beef tartare, blood pudding, strawberry dessert. The foie gras alone was worth coming back for. The beef tartare had a nice texture. The blood pudding was good but unconventional. It came with blue fin tuna & marinara sauce which did not blend together fully, but still tasty. Service & ambience were superb.

Even though we didn't have a reservation, they accommodated us, a couple of hungry travellers. The interior decor was nice & lighting, with rock walls & artwork & a delightful atmosphere. Service was amazing… they were very friendly & made us feel comfortable, & well taken care of. We shared a starter of fois gras & jam sandwich which was an exciting way to start the evening. Unique & rich flavours combined, & we paired with a fantastic mocktail & beer that were locally made. Well the beer was from Gatineau. But still. & my mocktail had the perfect orange & olive garnish that were the perfect fragrant pairing for the drink. For mains we had the halibut & blood pudding. I had the halibut & I eat a LOT of fish…this was the best I have had. It was a generous size filet of halibut, an amazing cream sauce & carrots prepared two ways that made my mouth water! He ate the blood pudding with tuna, & was very pleasantly surprised by the textures & flavours. I had a bite & enjoyed it too! We each got a dessert & had a taste of one another's. The sage ice cream was so very special… all the plates we had were beautifully arranged to the eye, fragrant & incredibly tasty. I was honestly blown away by The Hobbit tonight. The staff, the food, the atmosphere… everything was perfect. Thank you very much for having us. I will never forget this delicious meal & experience.

Attractive restaurant but service somewhat unhelpful & slow. In the first hour we were there we only received the first course. Food was odd. Terrine delicious but accompanied by weirdly floral tasting jam. Salad starter attractive but beets somewhat raw & green sauce off putting. Most of the mains strange: blood sausage, raw scallops, or sweetbreads. Of the ones we ordered, the Silesian dumplings were dry & flavorless. We divided on the other mains, I found the pork dry & difficult to eat & my companions weren't crazy about the halibut. We skipped dessert!

Ate here on Good Friday. Made a reservation over a month ago-visiting from out of town & wanted a nice restaurant for dinner that was close to our hotel, but could also be appropriate for our 8 year old son.

Did not disappoint. Shared veal shank & the catch of day (cod). Also got dessert. Son had homemade iced tea & husband & I split wine. Server, Sebastian, was lovely.

We were seated in the back room. Front space had bar spots & was more busier. Back was also filled, but also a small space. Definitely want a reso.

I comment more on it later, but worked for us as a family since we knew our son would be fine sharing these type of dishes. Plus we ate snacks at hotel lounge ahead of time, so there wasn't any kid hunger pains. If you bring kids, I'd say bring two max. Since it's not a kid place, but could work if you know your family.

Overall very happy with our choice & money spent. Merci!
