My husband & I have been to Le Continental 3 times during my visits with him in QC. This time had me slightly wanting. We booked an earlier supper as we'd be coming into the Old city after a walk through the park & Plains of Abraham. Of course, I do understand that this restaurant is more semi-formal to formal, but our attire while not dressed up couldn't be fully helped. But from this point it felt as if we were not taken very seriously. The waiter was aloof & not welcoming. It appears he was new, so perhaps more training needed. However, we did notice an attitude shift more to what we'd come to expect of this restaurant from the previous 2 times we had come, when he serviced 3 older gentleman in business attire, so that was not appreciated. Though after 6pm we noticed all attitudes were more professional & what we'd come to expect. It was an oddity. The meal was excellent. We had escargot for an appetizer. It was delicious but nothing out of the ordinary. The canard à l'orange pour 2 for our main, which was so tender & juicy with a side of pomme de terre dauphinois. That isn't to say you don't receive a side of seasonal vegetables with the course. All in all the food was on par as to what we were expecting. Service was a bit wanting. No pleasantries or chit chat. So for a meal that we spent $$$ on the atmosphere was wonderful, food great, but service we were left feeling out of place.

We spent a long weekend in Quebec City & selected three highly rated restaurants for dinner, one for each evening. The experience at Le Continental was by far the worst of all three, from the perspective of the quality of the food. We are well traveled & have dined at numerous Michelin starred restaurants around the world, so we aren't concerned about the price of the meal, but we expect the food to be worthy of the price. Le Continental delivers great service & a trip back in time to what fine dining represented in the 1960's, but unfortunately the food remains stuck in the past. The Cesar Salad dressing had way too much raw garlic, the cheese croquettes were cold & the cheese still hard, our duck was overcooked & needed every bit of sauce to compensate for its dryness, the French fries were over-salted, etc. Overall the meal was poor or average at best. We dined at two other excellent restaurants in Quebec City for the price of the one meal at Le Continental & both of those meals were memorable for all the right reasons. We will not be dining here again.

Matthew was outstanding. The presentations at our table deserved standing ovations! This was definitely a dinner that my wife & I will never forget. Great job Matthew!
