I was skeptical that this might be a tourist trap, especially since it's located in the heart of old town of Quebec & has way too many reviews but I was pleasantly surprised. Highly recommend the breakfast poutine. Im not a poutine person but very much enjoyed it. Also visit the washroom lol it's very cool.
Went for brunch on Easter Monday with my family (3 adults & 2 kids) & really enjoyed it.
The service was excellent: La Bûche is lucky to have servers like Yoan & Audrey. Yoan recommended the Cassolette du bûcheron, & it was really, really good - eggs, bacon, ham, sausage, mushrooms, béchamel, potatoes, spinach, & cheese curd in a mini cast iron. There was something special about it that set it apart from a typical breakfast plate. Also, the toast was like eating a cloud.
The menus are printed in old-school Canada workbook style like the ones we had in school growing up. & yeah, everyone wears flannel, but I don't know anything more Québécois than bathroom soap dispensers made out of Labatt 50 bottles.
Hearty, tasty food, fun vibe, good service. Definitely going back.
TLDR: tourist trap. Nauseous for the rest of the day.
- shrimp roll: extremely rich but tasteless bun like deep fried in butter? Total 10 cold baby shrimp sizes of a small button, but the celery were so loosely chopped even same size as the shrimp?
- Duck wings are amazing but they don't seem to promote it it was a small item on the menu
- maple taffy: $5 buys you a lolli with coin size & thickness
I couldn't write a review glowing enough to adequately hype up how incredible La Buche is. I found it by searching around for family friendly restaurants & it's a 3 minute walk from Cheatau Frontec, where we were staying. We went on a Saturday evening & it was fairly busy but we had a nice window table right away. The host was one of the nicest people I've ever encountered in the restaurant industry. They didn't have any high chairs for our 9 month old, so he sent someone to a nearby establishment to pick one up for us. He was continually coming to chat with our daughters, & even spent a minute to sit & interact with the baby. He is a true gem andI hope La Buche knows how lucky they are to have him!
Our server was equally excellent. I practice French as much as possible & he was patient, answered the couple of pronunciation questions I had, & was just generally wonderful.
My husband & I split a fois gras & it was excellent. I had a pork dish with puréed carrot & it was the perfect portion size. Everything was super well prepared. I forget what my husband had, the poutine perhaps? Whatever it was, he enjoyed it. & oh my goodness, the rolls are delicious. Definitely do not skip them. My daughter struggled a bit as she got the croquettes & they were very meat heavy. & she's been on a French fry strike lately, so she ate other things off our plates & it worked out.
Also definitely take a trip to the bathroom. One of the coolest restrooms I've ever seen.
