Food is very good. If your American you can relate it to Southern style food. The shepherds pie is really popular & it is good but is more like beef stew. The service was fast & friendly.
My wife & I went to La Buche on Aug 25 2026 for breakfast because at night there is always a lineup.
She had the caramel crepes & I had the 2 eggs with bacon breakfast. We had coffee & orange juice as well. The bacon was not done in a way I had ever tried but it was great.
The service was great & the food came fast. The atmosphere in the restaurant was awesome. You also get a receipt for 15% at teh nearby La Buche Souvenir shop but for some reason whenever we tried to stop in it was closed.
Great restaurant filled with Canadiana items: from the decor with old wooden sleds hanging from the ceiling to the menu, which hits all the classics. The onion soup is particularly tasty, while the tourtière was chockfull with meat (although I didn't like the floating crust on top - I prefer the traditional double crusted pie).
Service is efficient & staff is super friendly. You need reservations, however.
La Buche is a Quebec-style restaurant located in the middle of Old Quebec.
It definitely has a touristy feel, but the restaurant was packed with customers, which was a good sign.
Our family of four ordered the Quebec shepherd's pie, venison tartare, Salade de la Bûche with smoked trout & goat cheese, meat pie croquettes, & a few beers. Everything was delicious.
I was especially impressed by the venison tartare, I was worried it might have a strong gamey taste, but there was no unpleasant smell or flavor.
The atmosphere is lively & bustling, which we enjoyed, although it's definitely not a quiet place.
The only downside was that the restaurant wasn't using the air conditioning, so it felt a bit warm. Still, if you want to try traditional Quebec-style food, I'd definitely recommend giving La Buche a try.
Amazing authentic Quebecois Pea Soup! Awesome drinks, most notably the Courier de Bois maple whiskey! Like a fine dessert!
The Pate Chinois was not what were expecting. More like some pulled beef pot roast with gravy poured on top of some mashed potatoes & corn niblets. Have had many great Quebecois Shepherd's Pie over the years, & it was never like this. Was ok, but would not order it again. Should have ordered the tortierre instead.
Funky building & room. Only complaint is that the tables are jammed in way too close to each other. Service was spotty. Friendly enough, but some long AWOL periods where waiter disappeared.
I suspect that the brunch is better. We went for dinner. Worth a visit.
