Great night, great food in Quebec!
The food was good but not sure it's worth a Michelin star. The service is impeccable. The decor is lovely. We were 4 & loved our night. But now wow moment, not impressed. Fair.
We had previously dined at a Michelin restaurant in France & it was amazing - this one, not so much. Exorbitantly expensive for the taste of the wine & food. Lots of staff interaction & attention & the presentation of the many dishes was unique, inventive, pretty but not that tasty. Over-attention to style & using unusual ingredients that didn't deliver the best flavours & tastes. The wine pairings, for $150.00 each, also failed to deliver. The first whites were good but the red wine from Morocco should have stayed in Morocco as well as the Gavi from Italy. & the finishing cocktail took beautiful Chartreuse & mixed it with lime juice & saki - unique but not delicious. A waste of a French gem.
We did enjoy the amuse bouche & the bbq lobster in sauce. & of course the presentation of all the dishes served was amazing but not delicious. A famous chef once told me that great food should taste like the best that the ingredients can be - so an apple pie should taste like the best apple pie possible, as an example. Not like a bunch of additives to mask the flavour & offer up a conglomerate of palate confusions.
We're sorry we went - for almost a $1,000 for two people we could have had approximately three amazing dinners for two at other excellent restaurants.
Masterpiece in Quebec City
My recent dining experience at Laurie Raphaël was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment we arrived, the service was impeccable-attentive, refined, & perfectly paced.
What truly set this visit apart, however, was their exceptional hospitality toward my family. They provided us with a private room, which made our dining experience incredibly comfortable & stress-free, especially with children in tow. It is rare to find such a high level of thoughtfulness in a fine-dining setting.
As for the cuisine, it was simply sublime. The depth of flavor, creativity, & presentation far exceeded the standards of a one-star Michelin experience. Every course was a work of art that delighted the palate.
If you are visiting Quebec City, Laurie Raphaël is an absolute must-visit. It is truly a world-class establishment that balances sophistication with genuine warmth. We cannot wait to return.
Is there anything else you would like to add to this review, Goho?
Menu, service & saveurs exceptionnelles.
We loved EVERYTHING. The welcome, the service, the wines, the wonderful dishes, beautiful stylish presentation, the little surprises, the attention to all the details.
A Michelin star, earned everyday, expectations fulfilled equally, happy customers.
Thank you
Absolute wonderful michelin experience. I enjoyed walking through the kitchen to greet the chefs & seeing the bar, & finally sitting next to the beautifully decorated tree. The ambience was stunning. I got the personalized menu & shared dishes with my parenter, it was enough to fill me up. The only I absolutely disliked was the conservation alfred the farmers tart, it just did not leave a great taste in my mouth..however the other dishes were great. Notable favourites were the tradition chowder, the veggie gnocchi, & conservation orleans island baby kiwi. Also there was a gin cocktail, can't remember the name but it was yum.
I'm also greatly appreciative of the staff as I was curious to try the pear in the alcohol drink, but I didn't like & they tried to make it more palatable. They gave me some great altnerative recommendations to try & get from saqs & I was curious to buying the bottle myself. I also enjoyed them questions about the dishes & they in turn were enthusiastic talking about it which I love to see. I would recommend this place only because I feel like the kitchen & crew tries to connect with you. If you come here, be involved & ask about why they did the dish this was way or the best way to consume it. Have a convo!
I've been fortunate to dine at some of the top Michelin-starred restaurants in the world & genuinely look forward to these experiences. To this day, my benchmark remains Blue Hill at Stone Barns.
With that context, this experience at Laurie Raphaël fell flat. The most glaring issue was the wine pairings. While the wines themselves were pleasant, they did nothing to elevate or interact meaningfully with the food-they felt like standalone glasses rather than thoughtful pairings.
The dishes were undeniably beautiful, but beauty alone isn't enough. Nothing truly wowed, surprised, or lingered. I left with a very large bill, a fair amount of disappointment, & the distinct feeling that I was still hungry-wishing somewhere else was open to get real food.
I would recommend skipping Laurie Raphaël & going to La Planque instead. You'll spend roughly a third of the price, eat a genuinely next-level meal, & leave satisfied rather than underwhelmed.
