Seasonal vegetables & fresh produce from the market, tasting menu, wine pairing, alcohol-free agreement
L'Orygine offers a remarkable dining destination in Quebec City, celebrated for its creative use of fresh, local ingredients and a thoughtful approach to seasonal menus. Many guests praise the elegant atmosphere and the meticulous attention provided by the staff, who are frequently noted for their warmth, professionalism, and ability to accommodate various dietary restrictions with care and creativity. The discovery tasting menu, complemented by both wine and non-alcoholic pairings, stands out as a highlight for many visitors seeking a refined culinary journey. While experiences can vary based on individual tastes regarding flavor intensity and pacing, the restaurant remains a favored spot for special celebrations and those looking to explore innovative, locally focused gastronomy.
We ordered five dishes, & two of them, the lamb gravlax & the ceviche, were not enjoyable for us. We didn't complain because we weren't trying to make a scene. We were hungry & kept eating to see if the flavors would come together.
Our servers were great. When one of them checked in, we simply said those dishes weren't our favorites. We explained that the ceviche tasted bland & that the lamb's flavors felt confused to us. Our server apologized, & we thought that would be the end of it.
Later, the GM came over & repeatedly asked if everything was okay. After he insisted, we explained what had happened. Instead of acknowledging the mistake, he responded defensively, saying that's why the dishes are served separately on the tasting menu & telling my husband that his palate was different from both his own & the chef's.
The restaurant knew those dishes weren't meant to be eaten together, yet served them together without any guidance, then somehow made it seem like the issue was with the customers rather than the service.
We were uncomfortable enough to skip dessert.
Mistakes happen, but how they're handled matters. If there's no intention of improving the experience, it's better not to approach the table at all.
Attentive service, warm ambience that's fit for a Michelin star restaurant. Sommelier is very knowledgeable. Loved the amuse bouche. The main dish I ordered was grilled halibut fillet with escabeche which was extremely dry because it was grilled & charred to an unpalatable stage. It was dry, overdone, & bitter. Dessert was flavourful.

I was hesitant to post this review. My partner & I really were so excited to go to L'Origin. The sebasste (rockfish) was a delicious dish with great complimentary flavours. However, I was just so disappointed with the flavours & quality of most dishes. While creative & aesthetic choices were well executed, when I am paying $500+ for 2 dinners & wine I do expect the flavour to consistently be there as well. I am from a province with many seasonal businesses, & was left with the feeling that they should just be closed for the winter, rather than provide expensive food that just doesn't taste good.
Most dishes had a flavour that drowned out part of the other dishes. We were served a delicious veal tarte that was overpowered by the tarte shell. There was one dish of beets-3-ways & despite loving beets the textures & lack of any other flavour getting through left me disappointed. The mushroom dessert was creative, but had a bad aftertaste.
If you have the extra cash, & reframe the experience as an art exhibition on local food availability & how we are dependent on trade routes for good flavours in our cuisine (especially in winter), then it's interesting, although a little costly.
In the end we were left disappointed with the flavour while the aesthetic of the food was completely on point. It looked good. It presented well. 3 out of the 6 dishes tasted fine (not amazed) & 3 left me very disappointed that this was the restaurant we chose for our holiday this year.
This was my first Michelin Star restaurant & I was surprised at how little flavour most dishes had. I was expecting more, as I've had amazing meals at non-starred restaurants locally. I feel they focused far more on aesthetic than flavour.
Picked the place for my son's birthday celebration during our Quebec trip, love the atmosphere right after we walked in. Our server Sam is very friendly & confident comes to recommendation, we enjoyed the food especially & melting pork belly! Sam & another staff also sang a French version of birthday son while bringing him the delicious deconstructed strawberry dessert. My boy said this has to be a 5 stars ^_^
Must go place if you are in Quebec City & are looking forward to the dinner of the century!!! Food was great & arrived quickly. Every part of the food was explained with detail. Ambience was really good, it was spacious as well. Food was the best, if you could put poetry on a plate it would be that. Tons of vegetarian meals also! Need to have meals: mushroom morel risotto, Peach & Mozzarella salad & Tomato & Paneer. Desserts: Strawberry & Hazelnut, Lemon thyme Panacotta. Drink: Cola. The vegetables were so good kids plates were completely clean. They had grilled peach & squash without anyone asking them to. Who knows what other veggies they ate. To be honest some of the vegetables were so delicious you didn't even realize what you ate. Our 4 year old son also enjoyed. We had a great host, Sam, who guided us through with the best meals & drinks not to forget desserts! & the Strawberry hazelnut had delicious jelly & wafers topped with ice cream had strawberries, but most importantly the strawberry wafer paper was great! & the Tomato & paneer had savory herb sponge cake! Over all great experience!!!!👌😁
Marvellous, Splendid, & Stupendous. No words come close to describe the taste of this restaurant, which completely blew our minds away. We all are vegetarian & there is a one in 500 chance to find a restaurant that's rated so good & focuses on vegetarian. Our kids don't like vegetables but they ate squash, mushroom, & peppers & they loved every bit. We are staying for 4 days & we know which meal will be our last one. Definitely recommend mushroom & morel risotto & grilled peach salad. The desserts had all textures, with thin strawberry wafer paper, crunchy tarts, & strawberry gel with ice cream. Our helper was Sam & he was phenomenal he recommend great options & told us about the food. You know it's really hard to find a place with vegan options that taste like veg. DEFINETLY RECOMMEND!:)
