Grabbed a table on a random Tuesday night & the tourtière with the wild mushroom sauce was ridiculously good, exactly the kind of hearty Quebecois cooking I was hoping for. The dining room has this cozy old stone & wood beam thing going that makes you forget you're a five minute walk from the boardwalk. Our server actually took the time to explain the history of the building & walked us through the menu without rushing us even though it was a weeknight & not too packed. Wasn't cheap but between the caribou dish & the maple dessert to finish, worth every dollar for a weekend trip that felt a little more special.

The Vibe: Historical charm paired with polite, swift service-marred by a kitchen that thoroughly fails its own heritage.
?There is an undeniable allure to dining inside the Maison Jacquet, Québec City's oldest residential building. The staff at Aux Anciens Canadiens execute their front-of-house duties with practiced grace & attentiveness. Unfortunately, the grace ends the moment the plates arrive. For a dining room charging fine-dining prices, the kitchen delivers elementary-level missteps.
?Beef Wellington: The ultimate test of technique, completely botched. Instead of a crisp, golden puff pastry wrapping a tender, medium-rare tenderloin, the dish arrived as a soggy, waterlogged jacket hiding an overcooked, gray block of beef. The duxelles lacked seasoning, leaving the entire plate tasting of steam & disappointment.
?Grandma's Treat (Gâterie de la Grand-Mère): A menu item promising comforting traditional Québécois flavors that instead delivers pure blandness. If this recipe was passed down through generations, someone lost the spice rack along the way. It was under-seasoned, uninspired, & frankly, any grandmother worth her salt would be embarrassed to claim it.
?The Verdict
At this price point, historical atmosphere & polite service cannot mask a complete lack of culinary execution. You are paying top dollar for tourist-trap mediocrity. Save your money & eat elsewhere.

dinner here was a strange, wonderful experience. the atmosphere, in a truly old building with haphazard decor, is eclectic & homely. the service was friendly, kind, & full of humour from start to finish. we really liked jacob, who took good care of us. the food was thoughtful & felt nourishing to the body & soul. we defaulted to the most quebec-y options & loved every course, from the pea soup to the meat pie to the maple syrup pie. it felt like eating chez mamie. full of good food, we couldn't help but encourage some fellow tourists on the sidewalk to go in & eat immediately! it was easily the most expensive meal we had all weekend, but we had zero regrets.

Dinner in the oldest building in North America. It was wonderful. My son thoroughly enjoyed his Beef Wellington. My Daughter had the three fillets. Others had the Bison stew, Seafood platter & the grilled salmon plates. The rice with the seafood is wild rice. The beef stew comes on a plate with a small pastry like the beef wellington crust under it.

We really enjoyed this restaurant in the heart of Old Quebec! The food was absolutely amazing! We tried two soups, split pea & the chef's soup, both delicious! We devoured them immediately, so no pictures, sadly. We shared the grandma's plate with meat pie & a variety of sides, everything was so full of flavor & incredibly delicious! For dessert, we had thr Maple Syrup Pie & the Maple Syrup Bread Pudding, amazingly packed with flavor!
Our server was very attentive, cheerful & ready to fill our water glasses each time he stopped at the table. We felt very spoiled by his friendly attention.
The atmosphere is extremely charming, combining old & modern features & decor. & don't miss the bathrooms! A cute little closet with unique features!
Highly recommended this spot, its the oldest French building in Quebec & offers amazing food & service!

We had a Cesar salad, Gramma's special (meatballs & meat pie) & Salmon pastry with veggies.
The food was good. I really wish it wasn't either 4 or 5 stars. This would be 4.3.
Service was good - seems quite standard in Quebec's tourist areas.
The building is unique, old & has a great atmosphere.

Dined here 40 years ago on our honeymoon, & thoroughly enjoyed being back. Our waiter was superb, & informed us the chef is the same - in his 42nd year! My husband loved the escargot & his beef wellington. The vegetarian option (mushroom tofu stew) was average, but worth the tourist adventure to dine in the oldest building in North America!

I got the lunch special, which is a three course meal. A super unique building that was fun to eat in! It's on the pricey side though

I felt this restaurant was underrated. No, it is not'michelin', but it was for us an excellent meal with excellent service in a very old building in Q C. If authentic food & friendly service is your thing, give them a try.
