Review Summary

Aux Anciens Canadiens is widely celebrated for its charming, historic atmosphere and its dedication to traditional Québécois cuisine, with many visitors praising the authentic setting housed in one of the oldest buildings in the city. Guests frequently highlight the attentive and friendly service, particularly when enjoying the popular lunch specials, and many consider the maple syrup pie and various meat dishes to be standout offerings. While the vast majority of diners describe their experience as memorable and delicious, some reviewers note that the food quality can be inconsistent, with a few guests finding certain dishes to be overpriced or underwhelming compared to the historic reputation of the institution.

The soup of the day was thin broth, & the entree, chicken with rice, was dry. Others reported similar reactions to their meals.

The bison bourguignon was the best, then the meat pie. Didn't like the onion soup much though. The service was exceptionally good!

I was here for the poutine. It was fine.

I guess this place is a bit of a classic in terms of places to go in the city. The building is certainly memorable. I wasn't sure what I wanted & went with the duck poutine. It was fine, as mentioned above. In the end, it's hard to make poutine bad. The duck on it was more or less flavorless, which is why I would give this a 4.

Spinach soup was good & the maple bread pudding was very good.

A tad pricey but I think you pay for the institution. While this place may have seen better days in the kitchen, it's worth going to once in your life.

The pea soup & duck confit were delicious. The portion sizes for the main course & dessert were quite large - a bit too much for my taste, but great if you're really hungry. I also appreciated the availability of non-alcoholic beer options.

We had a wonderful meal & we were very pleasantly surprised to see some vegan options (beyond just the salad)! The pea soup is also vegan which is a must-try!

They had a special dessert when I went here - a white cake with dates & brown butter glaze? Not exactly sure. That cake was revelatory. My god. It was so good, just thinking about it makes my mouth water.

Since I wasn't that hungry I just got the onion soup which I didn't like - it was way too salty.

We've dined here now 3 times, & over the years, this wonderful spot has retained its charm & quality of cuisine. The food is piping hot, & the ingredients used are of exceptional quality. The price is very reasonable - today we had the daily special; glass of house wine, soup, main course (Filet Mignon), & Apple Crumble dessert - $40. Fantastic lunch, the staff is very friendly, & the ambience is straight out of Europe. There is a lot of competition for your dining dollar in Quebec City, but this one is a gem.

We took the set lunch . The onion soup is too salty, we asked to add some hot water. The fries is overfried. The sauce with the pork tenderloin is too strong. The meat is too tough.
