We were a party of six & were seated promptly in the upstairs dining room. Our waiter took our wine orders & appetizers. The duck poutine was a pppular choice & did not disappoint. Entree ordered included cassoulet,
White cod & steak. The entrees all got high reviews. Service was very good. A great restaurant.
Cozy atmosphere & very good food — mussels, french onion soup, tartiflette, wine, & profiteroles. If you are looking for a memorable evening at a classic Quebec bistro, this is the place.
We were greeted right away at the door. The two servers were hospitable & friendly. We ordered drinks & we ordered appies & our main right away. The appetizers came fairly quickly, French Onion soup & escargot. Both were exceptional. The escargot was slightly muted by excess butter & cheese, but overall great choices for us to whet our appetites. We were asked if we wanted our entrees right away, but we opted for a few minutes to digest & sip our local beer & white wine we ordered. The servers seemed to have impeccable timing as just as we were pretty much ready for our entrées, the server brought our food over. We had the canard du confit & moules de marinière. Both were cooked to perfection. The duck leg was moist & savory. The moules were tasty & juicy. Lastly we ordered the crème brûle & tartin. The tartin was amazing. Apple in between flaky pastry & brown sugar & cinnamon sauce, topped with a scoop of ice cream. It was to die for! The crème brule was the only slight disappointment, as the custard was cooked slightly too fast & left a grainy egg yolk flavour at the bottom of the dish. Overall my husband & I enjoyed our once in a few months dinner date together. It was slightly pricier than we normally spend, but worth the meal.

We were thrilled with our dinner at the Bistro St. Malo. Ian, the waiter was charming & attentive & took his time with us. Our food was delicious...we started with a creamy boeuf tartare. My husband loves duck confit & was not disappointed with the tender piece in his cassoulet. I had wonderfully plump moules frites in a cheese.& mustard sauce...the fries were amazing. A great bottle of French wine, a corner table by the window & a.warm & friendly atmosphere. A great spot in the lower part of the city.
We had an excellent & enjoyable dinner. One of the co-owners was our waitress & she was fantastic - helped us to choose a perfect wine, & brought out surprises to acknowledge our anniversary that evening. I would definitely return here as the food & service were of the highest quality!
We were to be in Quebec City just two nights & had done our research & decided we wanted authentic French cuisine & picked St-Malo after reading the great reviews. As the only available table inside was right at the back near the kitchen & bar., we took a little table in front where we enjoyed watching the world go by.
The staff bent over backwards to make us happy. I'm a scotch drinker & the chef offered me a shot of his very own personal 12 year old single malt scotch whisky. It was delicious. This was a great start to an excellent dinner. My wife loves onion soup & was not disappointed, calling it the best she'd had (& I make a pretty fine onion soup!). She followed that with Mussels Marina, which she said were perfect. I had the octopus salad to start which was delicious. Their on-line menu offers a Cassoulet which I was looking forward to as I can't find a good one in Toronto, but I learned that this was only offered in the winter (I wish they would update their on-line menu to current offerings). The server suggested the beed cheek & I enjoyed. Many of the wines on their wine list are not currently available since covid but the server brought us a couple of other tasters to try that were not on the wine list & we settled on a delicious California Cabernet Sauvignon.
My wife & I have eaten in many fine dining restaurants over the decades but now we prefer friendly little bistros with good authentic food & this is what you get at Bistro St-Malo. Excellent food & service that won't break your wallet.
Service was perfect, atmosphere was warm & cozy, food & wine were superb. Highly recommended for a more intimate meal, as the restaurant probably seats 24-30 max which makes for a different atmosphere than other bistros in town & may appear more upscale but are seating 100.
Get a reservation & eat dinner at this superb bistro. The staff is helpful & welcoming. Great selection of wines. The duck was perfectly cooked sitting on a well seasoned ratatouille. The veal sweet breads were excellent as was the potato gratin they were served with. Save room for the titan Caramell. Great food, pleasant atmosphere, & a memorable evening.
