Review Summary

La Traite offers a memorable culinary journey that highlights local boreal ingredients in a serene, beautifully decorated setting by the river. Many guests appreciate the sophisticated, well-presented dishes, particularly the bannock, various salmon preparations, and the creative use of wild flavors. While experiences with service and portion sizes vary, many visitors find the staff to be welcoming, professional, and attentive. The terrace provides an exceptional atmosphere for a peaceful meal, and the restaurant remains a popular choice for those looking to enjoy refined indigenous-inspired cuisine in a unique environment.

My experience dining at this restaurant was mixed, & perhaps my expectations were a bit higher given the setting. I had breakfast twice & dinner during my stay at the hotel.

The first breakfast was YOGOURT & GRANOLA MAISON, a large bowl of whipped yogurt topped with homemade granola & fruits, all drenched in maple syrup. While I love maple syrup, I found the amount overwhelming, & it overshadowed the other flavors. The portion size was also quite large, & I wasn't able to finish it. We were also served toasted bannock slices, but unfortunately, they were overcooked & too hard to chew.

The second breakfast, BOL DE L'AMITIÉ VEGAN with oat milk, chia seeds, & oatmeal was much more to my liking, likely because I specifically requested a lighter hand with the maple syrup.

For dinner, I ordered a glass of Hee-Hee-Tel-Kin red wine from BC. However, I was taken aback when the person pouring the wine casually remarked that I had made a poor choice since the wine was better suited to red meat dishes, not vegetables. Additionally, I found the $20 charge for a small glass of wine to be overpriced, especially when a full bottle costs less than $30. The wine also had bubbles in it, which may indicate it's gone off. Unfortunately, it led to an upset stomach later in the evening.

The dinner menu was different than what's shown on the restaurant's website. The appetizer, a mushroom dish with a small portion of blueberries, was an interesting combination & enjoyable, but the main course was a letdown. A blend of white beans, cheese, & cabbage simply didn't complement each other.

The most disappointing part of the evening was the birthday celebration I had planned & mentioned upon arrival, which was completely overlooked. When our server finally brought out the dessert, I had to remind her of the note I had left earlier. At that point, it was clear that the surprise had been lost, & the moment was no longer special.

Although the food was very expensive, the experience was worth it since it was beautifully decorated in the inside. The bannock was delicious. The candied salmon was delicious in an unexpected but in a good way since the curing elevates the flavor of the salmon. The deer hearts & the pan-fried arctic were also delicious. The Three Sisters Style Cream soup tasted like broccoli cheese soup & was only okay. The desserts were delicious. Overall, it's worth going at least once while in the Québec City area.

The dining room was too loud & too hot on the night we visited. We understand that it is Carnaval & the staff were very busy, but we had to wait a long time to order & dessert was delayed because another table had ordered so many crepes.

The food was tasty but the service was not up to it: twice we had lukewarm dishes, & twice we asked for bread for our foie gras. On the table nearby they got the dessert right after the starters. I would understand this kind of blunders for a new restaurant but it is not the case.
