Lovely atmosphere, forgettable plates
First of all, the service was excellent. The staff was incredibly kind & attentive, the location is great, & the atmosphere feels like stepping into a cozy mountain house. The dining room is small & warm, & they also offer a very good selection of beers.
Unfortunately, the food was a real disappointment. The dishes are traditional & sounded delicious on the menu, but when they arrived they gave the impression of frozen food that had simply been reheated.
We ordered the St-Jean meat pie, which arrived visibly dry. It felt a bit like eating homemade food that a loving aunt might cook & send frozen by mail. That kind of food can feel special because you imagine the care behind it but once it goes through the freezing & reheating process, something is lost. It simply wasn't what we expected.
We also ordered the onion soup. It was quite watery, & the bread inside had a strange texture, beyond just being soaked. It wasn't terrible & it was still drinkable, but considering the price & the restaurant's reputation, it was underwhelming
One detail that surprised me: when we ordered, the waiter told us the dishes would be ready'in 15 minutes.' The precision was impressive… maybe that's just the defrosting time 😅
For context, this was a weekday dinner & the restaurant wasn't particularly busy. Maybe we just caught them on a bad day, I honestly don't know, but the food didn't live up to the expectations created by the menu, the prices, & the history of the place.
Une très belle table cozy avec de la très bonne cuisine traditionnelle, nous recommandons !
Little cozy restaurant with homemade type food. The 3 course menu with drink included is very convenient.
We have eaten here 4 times over the last 10 years & have enjoyed ourselves every time. Our last was on Christmas day. Serge at the front counter greated us with a smile &, with a warm welcome, walked us upstairs to our table. Julien was our server & was an excellent mix of attentive & private which allowed us to enjoy a romantic experience. While this is not a Michelin star restaurant it is deserving of as many accolades as can be imagined. You will find an excellent mixture of quebecois staples on the menu, each more tasty than the last. We decided to do the table d'hôte with an app, main, dessert & glass of wine for about $75. We overheard many of our fellow diners ohhing & ahhing over their meals. As you will read in their description this restaurant is in the oldest house in quebec city & there is a warning at the door that some of the floors are uneven & some of the celiengs are low. This oddity adds to the cozy atmosphere at Aux Anciens Canadian.
The food was absolutely delicious, beautifully presented, & full of flavor. The service was friendly & attentive, & the atmosphere was cozy & welcoming.
had their course menu for dinner. super nice staff, loved their interiors & cozy atmosphere. also enjoyed the food so much. my family had great time there. cute restaurant to visit!
Checked this place out while visiting Quebec City. Super cozy vibe & the staff were really nice. I ordered the Grandma's meat pie since it sounded like a local classic, but I honestly didn't love it-just not my thing. Might give another dish a try next time though!
Came here with my mom for an early dinner. What a fantastic gem this restaurant is! The service is very friendly, the food is authentic French-Canadian prepared from scratch, & the atmosphere is cozy; dine in a repurposed Old Quebec family house with wood-burning fireplace & low ceiling. It's definitely a romantic spot for a date too.
Thank you so much for the unforgettable meal! We will be back!
