The service was warm, friendly, & attentive throughout our visit. The restaurant has a charming old-world atmosphere that really brings the history & character of Old Quebec to life. A great place to enjoy traditional Quebec cuisine in a unique setting. Definitely worth a visit!
A classic French restaurant with a small but well-curated menu that delivers traditional French flavors. The Beef Wellington was well executed & enjoyable. Unfortunately, the French onion soup was overly salty. I was also disappointed that the Chef's Choice was another puff pastry dish with ham & cheese. Since we had already ordered the Beef Wellington, it felt repetitive rather than thoughtfully paired. The food was good overall, but the preparation lacked the variety & creativity I expected from chef's choice.
I guess this is traditional Quebecois cuisine. It was my favorite meal of a few days in Quebec City -- gamey, heavy, saucy, fruity. Nothing light. The atmosphere is quaint, like eating in an old boarding house or inn.
Summary
This is a rare bastion of integrity in a landscape of commercial artifice. It does not rely on the frantic gimmicks of modern dining; it simply exists as a superior institution. It is good for families & remains my favorite in the city. I have been many times.
The Experience
The atmosphere is grounded in historical permanence-authentic, quiet, & A+. The service follows suit with a disciplined professionalism that avoids the hollow, forced cheer of the service industry.
The Food & Value
The menu is simple & good. It is traditional, honest, & executed with A+ precision. There is no need for performative plating when the quality is this absolute. Furthermore, the price is great.
The Verdict
An exceptional convergence of food, service, & setting. It is excellent because it refuses to be anything other than what it is.
A fantastic spot for traditional québeqoise food. In one of the old city's oldest houses (1670), the atmosphere can't be beat.
Restaurant Aux Ancient Canadiens hosted our group of 16 in March 2026 with a Table d' Hote & the food & service was superb. We especially enjoyed the sampling of traditional Quebecois dishes. I've dined here several times since first finding it in 1981 & it's always a treat.
Lovely atmosphere, forgettable plates
First of all, the service was excellent. The staff was incredibly kind & attentive, the location is great, & the atmosphere feels like stepping into a cozy mountain house. The dining room is small & warm, & they also offer a very good selection of beers.
Unfortunately, the food was a real disappointment. The dishes are traditional & sounded delicious on the menu, but when they arrived they gave the impression of frozen food that had simply been reheated.
We ordered the St-Jean meat pie, which arrived visibly dry. It felt a bit like eating homemade food that a loving aunt might cook & send frozen by mail. That kind of food can feel special because you imagine the care behind it but once it goes through the freezing & reheating process, something is lost. It simply wasn't what we expected.
We also ordered the onion soup. It was quite watery, & the bread inside had a strange texture, beyond just being soaked. It wasn't terrible & it was still drinkable, but considering the price & the restaurant's reputation, it was underwhelming
One detail that surprised me: when we ordered, the waiter told us the dishes would be ready'in 15 minutes.' The precision was impressive… maybe that's just the defrosting time 😅
For context, this was a weekday dinner & the restaurant wasn't particularly busy. Maybe we just caught them on a bad day, I honestly don't know, but the food didn't live up to the expectations created by the menu, the prices, & the history of the place.
The lunch special is kind of value if you really care about being full. The portion sizes are generous but the food was very subpar. Everything we ordered was too salty/sweet/soggy/bland for my taste but I guess that's what traditional food is like. Service was good. Place seems like a bit of a tourist trap overall.
