Just enjoy how the pastries look on the shelves. They look amazing. We bought at least 6 different items ,- found the pastry to be low on flavor, not light & fluffy, but tough & difficult to bite & chew. Regret purchase rather than feeling good about indulgance. Bottle water was cold & refreshing.
I was here around 8 in the morning & there was no line & plenty of seating available. It got busy quickly though. I had the croissant breakfast sandwich combo & enjoyed it, though I don't think there was anything extra special about the croissant here, perhaps it was not newly made in that morning. Regular coffee was included in the combo, latte was 1.80 extra. I also ordered a pastry with chocolate chips in the middle that I liked more, again it doesn't taste like it recently came out of the oven but it was nonetheless delicious.
This place has become an institution in Quebec City & I've always enjoyed visiting every time I come here. Sadly, after visiting this week it seems like it took a nose dive :-( The place was a mess. Dirty tables & chairs thrown around everywhere & garbage area was flooding with waste. It looked like they haven't cleaned the shop the whole day. There was a huge line up to order that moved very slowly. The place was clearly understaffed & the staff working didn't seem to care. The pastry I ordered was dry & cold & the warm drinks we ordered were ordinary tea & hot chocolate that was hugely marked up. As a business when people still show up to you in droves like that, you should take treat that as a blessing & go out of your way to keep their business not take them for granted like that. Huge fail.
My friend & I had a delicious ham & cheese croissant & carrot cake, along with great coffee. There was plenty of seating plus washrooms. They had a ton of pastry & lunch options. The only downsides were confusing/disorganized ordering & being on the pricey side.
Just so so.. the pastry didn't seem fresh or any good & my friend who tried it said it was just ok. I didn't to eat as as they looked stale 😝
The most delicious pastries you have ever tasted. The pastry was so flaky, custard layer delicious & fresh raspberries & blue berries on top. A party in my mouth haha. We sat on the patio & enjoyed the scenery as well.
The plain croissants were ok, but the "fresh"raspeberries on a pastry my child bought were full of black mold. She recognized this after she took her first bite. When my wife tried to exchange it/make the counter staff aware, they said the pastry underneath was fine & that we should just eat around the berries!!! Luckily they changed their tune after we asked them to consult someone else behind the counter. The place itself desperately needs an update/reno (eg washroom was filthy, which is never a good sign for a restaurant). Overall disappointed- we were last here 14 years ago when they won "best croissant in QC". We had shared several memorable Paillard pastries. Visiting QC again this year we had been excited to return :-(. Unfortunately we can no longer recommend it.
I tried the breakfast croissant & the chocolate croissant. I personally found the pastry too sweet. However, the breakfast croissant was so good! I will recommend people having brunch or light breakfast here. Please be reminded that there's always a long line-up (around 15-20mins wait).
